Sandia Imaging Tool for Concealed Detonators Nominated in ‘ASTORS’

At times overshadowed by its electrically charged siblings the proton and the electron, neutrons quietly play important roles in national security.

They start nuclear reactions for weapons and power plants. They bombard materials for nuclear safety tests.

And now they have a new skill: telling whether a concealed, electric detonator is charged.

This neutron electric-field (E-field) imaging technology is developed by Yuan-Yu Jau funded by Sandia’s Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD) Program.

This work solves the problems of determining various electric properties inside a physically isolated space and the electronic charge/voltage state inside a metal box, the kind of metrology that was thought to be impossible.

Furthermore, owing to its imaging capability, the spatially dependent information can also be obtained.

This unprecedented capability makes an important breakthrough in imaging technology and provides new diagnostic power.

“The neutron E-field imaging technology is revolutionary,” explains Sandia quantum-sensing expert Yuan-Yu Jau.

“This penetrative but non-destructive imaging capability has potential to overcome the practical issues for studying electrical properties of new materials, analyzing storage capacity in advanced batteries or diagnosing electrical components of complex, assembled machines without removing them.”

“One advantage of this imaging technology is that it can absolutely determine the magnitudes and directions of the electric fields.”

Jau is helping neutrons develop their talent, and he’s leading an effort to build a new kind of neutron-based imaging system.

When finished, it will enable people to safely examine sealed metal boxes when opening them could be dangerous, whether that’s because inside is an explosive weapon or a malfunctioning, high-voltage fire set at a missile range.

Jau has already shown neutrons are up to the task at a large, specialized facility — the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Center for Neutron Research in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

“This is the first time anyone has been able to image an electric field that has been physically isolated,” said Dan Hussey, a NIST physicist.

“There could be something that you don’t want to disassemble but want to inspect. This approach might offer a way to see its electric fields even though barriers stand in the way.”

The technique requires an intense beam of polarized neutrons, the particles that together with protons form the nuclei of all elements other than simple hydrogen.

Neutrons possess the ability to penetrate dense materials, such as metals, which block the passage of other particles or types of radiation.

Unlike charged particles, such as positively charged protons, neutrons possess no net electric charge. However, they do have a magnetic property called spin, which can be manipulated by a magnetic field.

The neutron’s spin direction is affected by magnetism — something the research team used to their advantage.

“The neutron is electrically neutral, and yet we’re using it to sense the electric field,” Hussey said.

Jau is currently exploring how to redesign the system into a smaller, fieldable prototype for security applications.

Compact neutron generators are commercially available for laboratory, medical and industrial uses, but by and large, these spit out neutrons with so much energy that the imaging system cannot manipulate and analyze them.

Jau is working toward building a custom generator that tosses neutrons with much lower energies.

The National Nuclear Security Administration is funding these efforts.

Neutron spin exposes electric fields

A metal box, or Faraday cage (a container that blocks electromagnetic waves from going in or out), blocks electromagnetic waves attempting to enter or exit.

This conceals electrically charged devices inside and makes contents difficult to probe without opening the box, because charged particles like protons and electrons have trouble penetrating the barrier, which gives neutral neutrons the opportunity to shine.

Neutrons pass through metal with relative ease, and although they don’t have an electric charge, they do spin, which changes ever so slightly when the particle passes through an electric field.

Jau takes advantage of this phenomenon by polarizing neutrons, so they all have the same spin, and firing them through a metal box into a detector on the other side.

Some of the neutrons will never make it to the detector because they bump into the concealed object, while the neutrons that make it create an X-ray-like silhouette on the detector.

Of these particles, any that also pass through an electric field will have a different spin when they hit the detector than when they started, creating a second image that shows where electric fields are.

From that image, operators can decipher the voltage of the object and whether it’s charged, even if it is turned off or in sleep mode.

Neutrons also could be used in similar ways for other applications, according to Jau. They could be used to study electrical properties of new materials, analyze storage capacity in advanced batteries or diagnose electrical components of complex, assembled machines without removing them.

“In practice, different applications require different electric-field sensitivity and imaging resolution,” explains Jau.

“It doesn’t mean that our proof-of-concept demonstration is ready for all applications.”

“Several of them can already be done using the demonstrated experimental setup, but some others require further improvements in performance or in fieldable technologies.”

In other words, the mighty neutron might have more surprise talents to show off in the future.

  • The Slash CameraPole is a self-triggering platform with wireless data retrieval to detect and give warning of suspicious activities at the U.S.-Canada border, specifically a cleared stretch of land at the border that is approximately 20-feet wide, 1,349 miles long, and is referred to as the “Slash.”

  • This man-made, treeless zone is mandated by the International Boundary Commission and presents a formidable surveillance challenge, against such threats as illegal crossings, drug and illegal contraband smuggling and human trafficking.

  • Using the Slash CameraPole system, Border Patrol has been able to establish an advanced border surveillance capability where none existed before. 

  • Partnering with MIT Lincoln Laboratory and several private companies to create the Slash CameraPole with numerous ingenious features, such as solar panels and a back-up fuel cell system make it independent of the power grid, multiple infrared cameras (two long-range, one foreground, and one base imager with a fisheye lens) mean it doesn’t miss a thing.

  • The Slash CameraPole also employs advanced motion detection algorithms and automated alerts designed to improve classification of targets and lower the chance of false alarms from factors such as wild animals or vegetation moving in the wind.

    • NYCEM regularly tests plans by conducting drills and exercises, and responds to emergencies to ensure that other agencies not only follow these plans, but to foster communication amongst the responding agencies.

      NYCEM also operates the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) where city, state and federal agencies join representatives from the private and nonprofit sectors to coordinate complex responses to emergencies and disasters.

    • The agency also developed and runs the Notify NYC emergency alert program, by which citizens can sign up to receive phone and email alerts about emergencies and events happening in their neighborhoods.
