Dana Boente Named Acting Asst AG of the National Security Division

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has announced the appointment of Dana J. Boente as Acting Assistant Attorney General of the National Security Division.

Boente succeeds Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord, who serves as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and who recently announced that she would be departing in May.

“Dana Boente has been a dedicated public servant for decades and has served in important leadership roles in the Department of Justice,” said Attorney General Sessions.

“In recent months, he has provided extraordinary leadership during the transition period. I am pleased that he has agreed to continue his service by leading our efforts to keep America safe. I also thank Mary McCord for her dedicated service to the department.”

National Security Division (NSD)

The mission of the National Security Division (NSD) of the Department of Justice is to carry out the Department’s highest priority: to combat terrorism and other threats to national security.

The NSD, which consolidates the Department’s primary national security elements within a single Division, currently consists of the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review; the Counterterrorism and Counterespionage Sections, formerly part of the Criminal Division; and a new Law and Policy Office.

This organizational structure ensures greater coordination and unity of purpose between prosecutors and law enforcement agencies, on the one hand, and intelligence attorneys and the Intelligence Community, on the other, thus strengthening the effectiveness of the Department’s national security efforts.

Prior to this appointment, Boente had been serving as the Acting Deputy Attorney General since Jan. 30, 2017, and has served and will continue to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia since his confirmation by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 15, 2015.
