First Responders responded to the attacks not only at Ground Zero, but also at the Fresh Kills Landfill, the city morgue and temporary morgue locations. Fresh Kills was used as a temporary sorting ground for the rubble from Ground Zero with three objectives: to find human remains, personal effects and any evidence of the terrorist attack such as a hijacker’s box cutters, cell phones from the planes and the black boxes.
