Vigilant Solutions, a Finalist in the 2017 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, and a global intelligence and analytics company serving law enforcement agencies, has launched BallisticSearch™.
BallisticSearch is a new product providing law enforcement agencies with faster and more efficient cartridge case analysis, and was unveiled at the 2017 IACP Conference in Philadelphia.
BallisticSearch includes portable image capture hardware, cartridge case capture software and ballistics comparison technology.

The solution enables agencies to quickly compare evidence from crime scenes to help generate more investigative leads, and potentially identify more suspects and the firearms they use.
Developed using the company’s image analysis and technology expertise, BallisticSearch is designed to be the most efficient system available for analyzing ballistic evidence in both 2D and 3D format.
BallisticSearch can process evidence in minutes, while other systems can take hours to process the same evidence.
BallisticSearch’s faster analysis will have a huge impact on reducing backlogs.
With faster comparisons and potential links established, agencies can generate strong investigative leads boosting their ability to solve crimes more quickly, in some cases right from the crime scene.
This will help agencies establish a comprehensive ballistic collection program and ultimately reduce crime rates.
Other key advantages of BallisticSearch include:
- Expedited Processing
- Allows for Comprehensive Collection of Evidence to Solve More Cases
- Portable Capture Device Designed to be Small and Lightweight for Use in the Field
- Scalability, Affordability and Ease of use
- Ability to Share Data Across Jurisdictions
- Agency Control Over Prioritization and Deployment
Garry McCarthy, former Chicago Police Department Superintendent from 2011 to 2015, noted the need for cutting-edge solutions in fighting rising crime rates.
“The Department of Justice recently referenced a report from the FBI that the rate of violent crime has risen by nearly 7 percent during the last two years, and the homicide rate is up more than 20 percent,” McCarthy said.
“To combat violent crimes, any technology that allows law enforcement to do their jobs more quickly and efficiently are of paramount importance.”
“Vigilant Solutions has seen tremendous success with its license plate recognition and facial recognition technology, and it will be exciting to see this same innovation applied to ballistics analysis.”
BallisticSearch is being introduced as part of the LEARN 6.0 investigative platform, which includes Vigilant’s license plate recognition and analytics, now branded as PlateSearch™, and Vigilant’s facial recognition and analytics, now branded as FaceSearch™.

This comprehensive platform allows agencies of all sizes to access Vigilant’s image analysis capabilities to develop more leads and solve crimes faster.
“We know the goal for law enforcement is to quickly analyze and compare ballistic evidence to advance investigations and make arrests before more violent crimes occur, and we believe BallisticSearch will help to interrupt the cycle of crime; thereby reducing crime,” said Shawn Smith, President and Founder of Vigilant Solutions.
“We have received positive feedback from departments who have reviewed BallisticSearch, and we look forward to offering it to the entire global public safety community.”
Vigilant License Plate Recognition (LPR) & Analytics, Now Branded as PlateSearch™
(When lives are on the line, every second counts. Every tool available to help develop leads and solve crimes counts, too. License Plate Recognition technology helps law enforcement agencies solve more crimes. Courtesy of Vigilant Solutions and YouTube)
In July, the U.S. House Appropriations Committee issued a Committee Report (Report 115-XX) to accompany its version of the FY 2018 Homeland Security Appropriations bill.
The committee report included a strong statement of intent regarding CBP procurement of ALPR technology.
“The recommendation includes not less than $11,000,000 for the border security deployment program. CBP is encouraged to continue to procure license plate reader technology” according to the Committee Report.
Developed by law enforcement, for law enforcement, Vigilant’s license plate recognition (LPR) solution helps to address major issues for border security including stopping the flow of illegal persons and drugs into the country.
LEARN combines powerful analytics with license plate detections that help law enforcement develop leads and solve crimes.
With LEARN you can search by plate, partial plate and a vehicle’s year, make or model.

Crime rings or associates can be identified by comparing the vehicles seen at multiple addresses.
The solution includes fixed camera configurations that form a virtual fence around a geographic area of interest, scanning all plates entering or exiting the virtual fence area.
Agencies accessing LEARN also have the option to use Vigilant’s commercial vehicle detections which include over 7 billion license plate detections captured nationwide with over 150 million more added each month.
Because the data is hosted, data is never replicated or copied, leaving the agency in complete control of data sharing and data retention.
How it Works
Search by Plate:
- Search for plates on your hotlist, get alerts when the plate is spotted.
- Search historical data to find where the plate has been spotted in the past, whether the vehicle was present at the scene of the crime, or identify alibis and witnesses.
Search by Year/Make/Model:
- Narrow a potentially massive number of vehicles down to a manageable number, saving you time and resources.
Search by Partial Plate:
- Enter a partial plate along with any other data you have like date, location or time and you can search for the full plate number.
Search by Address:
- Focus on when and where a crime took place and compare it to historical LPR data to determine what, if any, vehicles were at the location during the time a crime occurred.
PlateSearch™ tells investigators something they do not know – for example, not just sightings and detections, but also a ranking of the likeliest locations to find vehicles of interest. In turn, users can use this information to fight and protect
