ZeroEyes, creators of an A.I.-based gun detection video analytics platform has received a Direct-to-Phase II SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant from the U.S. Air Force AFWERX, a Technology Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the innovation arm of the Department Air Force, for the research and development of unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) automated threat detection.
ZeroEyes has received $1,200,000 in funding to integrate ZeroEyes A.I. gun detection with UGVs at Minot Air Force base, home of the Minuteman III Nuclear Missile Forces and the B-52 Bomber.
This is the second Direct-to-Phase II SBIR grant awarded to ZeroEyes, as the company received a $750,000 grant as part of the 21.1 SBIR cycle for the research and development (R&D) of Drone-Robot Enabled Active Shooter Deterrence (DRASD) at Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD.
(What if there was a solution to detect guns before a mass shooting? Now there is. Find out how you can request this technology at your school, business, or facility to save the lives of your kids, teachers, customers, and employees. Courtesy of ZeroEyes and YouTube.)
This new grant, awarded by the US Air Force AFWERX during the 22.1 SBIR cycle, will enable ZeroEyes to test real-world use cases for integrating its A.I. gun detection software into UGV mobile cameras.
When a brandished gun is identified through the mobile camera, the ZeroEyes security platform will automatically validate the threat and prompt the UGV to interdict, delay, deter, and disorient active shooters with non-lethal strobes and high-pitched sirens until Air Force personnel can intervene.
“The integration of ZeroEyes technology will enable our UGV cameras to detect a gun threat and trigger an alert to our security personnel within 3-5 seconds,” said Captain Matthew Matuszak, Director of Innovation: Atomic Spark – Minot AFB.
“This innovative technology adds an extra layer of protection for our airmen, radically improving our response times and ability to deter a potential attack.”
Founded by a group of former Navy SEAL team leaders, ZeroEyes’ solution uses hundreds of thousands of proprietary images and videos to train its A.I. to be the most comprehensive and superior gun detection technology on the market.
The end-to-end solution is capable of proactively identifying guns before the first shot is fired by integrating its machine learning software with existing IP security cameras. The company’s operations center utilizes 24/7/365 human verification to deliver accurate and actionable intelligence about the brandishing of a gun near an occupied area or building.
Once a shooter or intruder is identified, ZeroEyes’ software triggers an automated alert to notify first responders of the threat, saving time and saving lives.
“25% of active shootings occur on government property, and more than a third of first responders get shot and/or killed when responding to an active shooter situation without intel,” said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes.
“This project is designed to save lives by empowering unmanned vehicles to both detect and delay active shooters until first responders, armed with crucial situational intel, arrive on the scene.”
At ZeroEyes, they develop simple and proactive solutions to mitigate mass shootings and gun violence, reduce response time and save lives.
ZeroEyes’ human-verified A.I. gun detection software solution integrates into existing security cameras and mitigates mass shootings and gun-related violence by reducing response times, providing actionable intelligence with images, and delivering clarity among chaos – ultimately saving lives.
ZeroEyes’ patented solution has been recognized by the that holds the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) SAFETY Act Designation as a promising anti-terrorism technology and is the first video analytics technology to receive SAFETY Act DT&E Designation.
Founded by Navy SEALs and Special Operations military veterans, ZeroEyes delivers accurate and real-time actionable intelligence about the brandishing of a gun near or in an occupied area or building, to local staff and law enforcement with an image of the shooter(s) and the location of the threat, within 3 to 5 seconds from the moment the gun is detected.
The ZeroEyes team also provides tech consulting, installation assistance, and practice drills for active shooter events to enhance safety at schools, corporate, and government facilities.
Headquartered in the Greater Philadelphia area, the company’s affordable and effective gun detection solution has been adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), leading public K-12 school districts, colleges/universities, commercial property groups, manufacturing plants, Fortune 500 corporate campuses, shopping malls, big-box retail stores and more.

Every second counts. What if there was more time to react, time to take cover, time to lock down, time to respond, and time to neutralize?
Active shooter events unfold at a blistering pace. Taking control of every precious moment between the first detection of a firearm and taking action will mean the difference between life and death.

Firearm detection is now included as part of Robotics Assistance Devices‘ (RAD’s) advanced artificial intelligence (AI) software suite, running on all RAD autonomous response security robots.
Because of RAD’s advanced AI-based software and hardware solution, responses and alerts are fully customizable.
Alerting local security, and law enforcement, automatically locking electronic doors, and triggering alarms are all standard responses for RAD devices.
RAD can give our schools, facilities, students, and citizens those valuable extra seconds or minutes when the RAD security robot autonomously detects, responds, and alerts.
‘ASTORS’ Awards Winner Robotic Assistance Devices (RAD), is a high-tech start-up that delivers robotics and artificial intelligence-based solutions that empower organizations to gain new insight, solve complex security challenges, and fuel new business ideas at reduced costs.
RAD developed its advanced security robot technology from the ground up, including circuit board design, and base code development. This allows RAD to have complete control over all design elements, performance, quality, and the user’s experience of all security robots, whether SCOT™, ROSA™, Wally™, Wally HSO™, AVA™, ROAMEO™, or RAD Light My Way™.
