New desktop and mobile web product helps users prepare up to 3 days in advance

The Weather Network has launched the Severe Weather Outlook helping users prepare for significant or severe weather such as thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow and freezing rain that may result in weather warnings or alerts being issued.

The launch of this tool, which is live on desktop and mobile web and coming soon to mobile apps, is another important step for the company as it continues to deliver on its promise to provide your weather when it really matters.

To help users plan ahead and be prepared for possible dangerous weather conditions, users will see at a glance a summary of the Severe Weather Outlook below their city’s short-term forecast.

The Severe Weather Outlook shows the risk of severe or impactful weather over a 3-day period and presents the information on a local risk scale from 0-10.

In addition to the severe weather risk, users will also find additional information such as advice on actions that should be taken for safety, local maps, relevant weather videos and emergency preparedness tips.

“We are currently tracking a large storm system that will impact most of the Lower 48 as it moves from the Intermountain West, across the Plains, Midwest and towards the Eastern Seaboard for the weekend,” said Chris Scott, Chief Meteorologist with The Weather Network.

In the event of severe weather, below are items to have on hand at home or in your vehicle:

  • One gallon of water per person per day, include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of evacuation order
  • Non-perishable food items such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods. Be sure to replace food and water once a year
  • First aid kit with personal prescription medication for up to 7 days
  • Manual can opener, crank flashlight, crank radio, extra batteries, cell phone charger, extra keys for car and house
  • Soap, hand sanitizer, tissue and toilet paper, extra clothing
  • Copies of passports, birth certificates, marriage certificate, insurance policies and wills
