In urban communities across the country, gun violence has become one of the most critical challenges facing our cities.

At stake are public safety and public health, with cities seeing improvements increasingly relying on a blend of community support from law enforcement, elected officials, healthcare organizations, schools/colleges and the community at large.

The annual NGI study is based on a subset of 88 U.S. cities using ShotSpotter technology during 2018 and 62 of those cities comparing use year-over-year during the same time period from 2017 to 2018.

There are more than 14,000 gun-related homicides a year in the U.S. and the number is rising, with an estimated 6 times more people wounded from gun crimes.

Unfortunately, these traumatic incidents of gun violence are significantly underreported through 911 calls and cities need better ways to gain awareness of gunfire events to ensure a timely and accurate response.

ShotSpotter is a leading gunshot detection, location and forensic analysis system used by more than 100 cities across the country, including nearly half of the top 50 metro areas.

These cities− ranging from Chicago to New York City, Miami, Denver and Fresno − rely on ShotSpotter’s sophisticated technology to detect, locate and alert agencies about gunfire incidents in real-time.

The digital alerts provide patrol officers with notification of gunfire in less than 60 seconds and critical data such as number of rounds fired, number of shooters, and type of weapons used.

This data-driven policing drives smarter deployment tactics and protects officers with increased tactical awareness.

It also enables law enforcement agencies to better connect with their communities and bolster their mission to protect and serve.

ShotSpotter is making a difference in helping combat gun violence and it is validated by the expanded number of ShotSpotter cities, now exceeding 100.

The company has also achieved an impressive 141% revenue retention rate − a proxy for satisfied customers that choose to both renew and expand their ShotSpotter coverage areas.

In the past year, ShotSpotter has continued to innovate and add valuable services for its customers.

One breakthrough for shooting investigations is the recently launched new ShotSpotter crime scene tool – the Investigative Lead Summary (ILS).

ShotSpotter screen shot images of a gunfire report from the mobile app.

The ILS is changing the way law enforcement initiates gun crime investigations.

The tool provides valuable data on the location, sequence and timing of each round fired in a gun crime so investigators can conduct more successful interviews of witnesses, suspects and victims and also ensure better collection of evidence.

There is a growing area of interest for ShotSpotter gunshot detection from urban healthcare organizations such as Cooper Health in New Jersey, in collaboration with their local law enforcement agencies. (See video above.)

Recent clinical research shows that not only do police response times improve with ShotSpotter, the real-time alerts help save critical minutes getting gunshot victims to hospitals for life-saving care.

This is a win-win-win for law enforcement, the healthcare organizations and the community.

Gun violence is a shared concern for everyone and goes beyond victims and shooters.

With smart gunshot detection technology, such as ShotSpotter, the combined efforts in a community can help make a positive difference for every neighborhood and resident.
