The Super Bowl is a No Drone Zone (See FAA Video)

The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) latest public service announcement is a reminder that the airspace around NRG Stadium in Houston is a No Drone Zone for the Super Bowl.

Temporary Flight Restrictions will prohibit certain aircraft operations, including unmanned aircraft operations, or drones, within a 34.5-mile radius of NRG Stadium in downtown Houston, Texas on game day.

The restrictions will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5.

The FAA produced a 20-second video that tells people to bring their lucky jerseys, face paint and team spirit to the game – but to leave their drones at home – because the stadium and the area around it is a No Drone Zone.

“Drones are becoming much more popular, but they also pose certain safety risks,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. “We’re working closely with our safety and security partners to spread the No Drone Zone message as widely as possible.”

The FAA is committed to working closely with our unmanned industry partners to educate people about how to fly safely.

Two of our key initiatives are the unmanned aircraft registration requirement and the Know Before You Fly campaign.

B4UFLY Smartphone App

B4UFLY is available for free download in the App Store for iOS and Google Play store for Android.

B4UFLY is an easy-to-use smartphone app that helps unmanned aircraft operators determine whether there are any restrictions or requirements in effect at the location where they want to fly.

Key features of the B4UFLY app include:

  • A clear “status” indicator that immediately informs the operator about the current or planned location. For example, it shows flying in the Special Flight Rules Area around Washington, D.C. is prohibited.
  • Information on the parameters that drive the status indicator
  • A “Planner Mode” for future flights in different locations
  • Informative, interactive maps with filtering options
  • Links to other FAA UAS resources and regulatory information
