The Richardson police officer shot and killed Wednesday night was identified Thursday as 37-year-old David Sherrard, a husband and father of two who is the city’s first officer to die in the line of duty.
Sherrard, a 14-year veteran with the department was shot and killed, along with another man on Wednesday night by a 26-year-old suspect who barricaded himself inside an apartment before being taken into custody.
During a news conference Thursday morning, Police Chief Jim Spivey said the department received a call around 7 p.m. on Wednesday about a disturbance with shots fired at the Breckinridge Point Apartments.

When officers arrived they found the first victim, 30-year-old Rene Gamez, and began rendering aid to him.
As they began to investigate, officers were led to an apartment where the suspect, identified as Brandon McCall, was located.
“They made entry and immediately encountered gunfire in the apartment,” said Spivey.
Sherrard was wounded and “fell back out of the apartment and was aided by other officers,” said Spivey.
“Other officers made entry into the apartment and they also encountered gunfire.”
Sherrard was taken to Medical City Plano where he later died from his injuries.
An hours-long standoff with SWAT team members ensued before McCall taken into custody.
“It’s a sad day for the Richardson Police Department,” said Spivey.
“This is the first officer that has been killed in the line of duty in our department in our 63-year history.”
“You can imagine the emotional trauma that is causing our department.”
Spivey added that Sherrard, of Wylie, leaves behind his wife and two young daughters.
“Officer Sherrard is a brave, tenured officer who died in the service of his community,” said Spivey.
“We’re with them. They are our family, they have been our family and they will continue to be our family and we will continue to support them as long as it’s necessary.”
The investigation has now been turned over the Plano Police Department.
