The white gunman who opened fire on a group of black party-goers at a San Diego apartment complex Sunday was a car mechanic who struggled with massive debt and a failing marriage in the last two years.
Court records show gunman Peter Raymond Selis filed for bankruptcy in late 2015, claiming he had debts of $108,028 and assets of only $14,100.
His filing described his spouse as his “estranged wife” and said he worked as a car mechanic at Mossy Ford in San Diego for the prior five years making $6,224 a month.
He listed a 12-year-old daughter, a 16-year-old son and a 19-year-old stepson on the form filed October 19, 2015.

Selis, 49, reportedly began shooting into a crowd of dozens of people attending a pool party at the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments complex around 6 p.m. Sunday, San Diego Police said.
Police did not immediately release information on a possible motive.
A witness told Fox affiliate KSWB-TV that the gunman “was sitting there with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other.”
“The suspect looked pretty relaxed, pretty relaxed,” the witness said.

Four black women, two black men and a Latino man were struck by the gunfire, police said.
One of the women later died at the hospital and several of the victims were critically injured, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.
Asked if investigators were considering the heinous act a possible hate crime, Zimmerman said they were exploring all possible motives.
The gathering was a birthday party held at the upscale complex near the University of California, San Diego.
A police helicopter arrived first at the scene, and the pilot reported seeing multiple victims on the ground and the suspect apparently reloading his firearm in the pool area, the police chief said.
Three officers rushed in on foot and shot Selis after he pointed a large-caliber handgun at them, she said.
Selis’ bankruptcy filing listed an address in the massive complex that spans several blocks.
“This is truly a horrific act of violence,” San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a news conference.
“Our entire city, all of our thoughts and prayers, all San Diegans’ thoughts and prayers, are with the victims and their families tonight.”
