Seven people, including three women, were shot in a single incident in Gary early Sunday morning, police said.
About 2:30 a.m. officers from the Gary (Indiana) Police Department were called to the 4600 block of Melton Road on the East Side of Gary, not far off Interstate 90, according to a statement from Lt. Dawn Westerfield, a spokeswoman for the Gary agency.
In an email, Westerfield wrote that police had been sent to the location for a report of one person shot.
But when they arrived, officers found four men and three women had been shot, she said.
An eighth person suffered an injury to his leg as he tried to escape the gunfire, Westerfield said.

Detective Sgt. William Fazekas was leading the investigation in the aftermath Sunday morning.
He said two men were thought to be responsible.
“One is in custody right now and the other one is going to be identified; I’m working on that right now,” he said about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Fazekas said he didn’t know what led to the shooting.
“There’s no motive at this time,” he said.
No details about ages or conditions were immediately released, officials said.
Police did not say whether anyone had died from his or her injuries.
“The incident appears to be isolated and at least one person of interest has been identified,” Westerfield wrote, prior to Fazekas noting that person now is in police custody.
Westerfield did not provide additional details about the circumstances of the shooting.
