Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a contagious disease caused by a virus, emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, and has since spread worldwide, leading to the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 can be severe and has caused millions of deaths around the world as well as lasting health problems in some who have survived the illness.
Older people are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms, and some people continue to experience a range of effects (long COVID) for months after recovery, and damage to organs has been observed.
Nasopharyngeal (nasal) swab testing requires healthcare workers to be within close proximity to and have contact (via the swab) with potentially infected patients, to insert a 6-inch long swab into the back of the nasal passage through one nostril and rotated several times for 15 seconds, then repeated through the other nostril.
The swab is then inserted into a container and must be transported to a lab to perform testing.
An Alternative to Provider-Administered Swab Tests for COVID-19
TeknoScan Systems Inc., a Platinum Award Winner in the 2018 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Program, has developed a novel breathalyzer for Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are present on COVID-19’s infected people breath.
Using the TSI-3000 Analyzer Mobile Device procedure involves the person being tested to expel breath ten times onto a nano-carbon coated sample card.
The sample card traps and enriches the VOCs on the person’s breath, allowing for a faster, less invasive, less painful, and safer collection method as no healthcare workers are directly exposed to potentially deadly virus collection.
The sample card is inserted in a heated inlet to vaporize the sample into a dual polarity ion mobility spectrometer utilizing a front GC separation technique.
Sample analysis processing takes only 20 seconds and the results are immediately available on the monitor screen and displayed as Green: risk-free, no Covid-19 biomarkers detected, or Red: high risk, Covid-19 biomarkers detected.

The revolutionary TSI-3000 Mobile Analyzer method technology has been used to screen over 900 people in India, with 95% detection rate confirmed by PCR test.
The TSI-3000 Mobile Analyzer enables large numbers of people to be quickly screened with no need for expensive, consumable reagents.
Because the nano-carbon coated sample cards undergo sterilization in the heated inlet at 250oC, it automatically eliminates the collected virus on the sample card and allows for the next sample to be collected.
