President Joe Biden nominated David Pekoske in May for a second term as the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Seventh Administrator, and the U.S. Senate voted to confirm him on Thursday of last week
Administrator Pekoske leads a workforce of approximately 60,000 employees, the security operations at nearly 430 airports throughout the United States, and has federal responsibility for the security of surface transportation in the United States, including mass transit systems, pipelines, and railways.
“It is a privilege to continue serving the American people alongside an incredible workforce of dedicated and highly skilled professionals,” said Pekoske.
“I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure our nation’s transportation system remains secure and facilitates the movement of people and cargo.”
In his first term, Administrator Pekoske focused on the agency’s implementation of technology advancements at airport security checkpoints, which includes improvements in identity management, on-person screening technologies, and X-rays.
He also led the rapid improvement in cybersecurity resilience of critical transportation infrastructure for oil and natural gas pipelines; freight, passenger, and transit rail; as well as aviation security at airports and airlines.
Administrator Pekoske has ensured the expansion of the TSA PreCheck® program that now boasts more than 12 million members, over 200 participating airports, the majority of domestic airlines, and an international TSA PreCheck location in the Bahamas.
President Biden originally appointed Pekoske to serve as the Acting Secretary of Homeland Security on Jan. 20, 2021. On Feb. 2, 2021, Pekoske continued to serve the Department as the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary to provide continuity of leadership during the transition. He returned to TSA on June 28, 2021.
Under his leadership, TSA improved security for both aviation and surface transportation through close partnerships and alliances, a culture of innovation, and the development of a dedicated workforce.
In addition, Administrator Pekoske has identified key priorities for his next term in support of national, departmental, and agency strategies for transportation security, which include:
Achieve and implement pay equity.
-
Equitable compensation remains an essential element in their effort to recruit, train, equip, and retain a highly skilled and professional workforce on the frontlines of transportation security.
Continue to invest in advanced technology.
-
As TSA looks to the future of travel and identifies the requirements to enable the agency to remain ahead of emerging threats, TSA has determined that continued technology investment is essential.
Strengthen the exceptional partnerships with transportation stakeholders and international governments.
-
These integral partnerships make security more effective, and increasingly efficient while also enhancing the passenger and the shipper experience.

In addition to his role as Administrator, Pekoske was also a commissioner on the Cyberspace Solarium Commission that developed a consensus on a strategic approach to defending the United States in cyberspace against attacks of significant consequence.
Before joining TSA, Pekoske was an executive in the government services industry, where he led teams that provided counterterrorism, security, and intelligence support services to government agencies.
Pekoske served as the 26th Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, commanding the Coast Guard Pacific Area and Coast Guard Defense Forces West, where he led all Coast Guard operations in the Western Hemisphere, and culminating a Coast Guard career of 33 years that included extensive operational and command experience.
He is a recognized expert in crisis management, strategic planning, innovation and aviation, surface transportation, and maritime security, and has been twice awarded the Homeland Security Distinguished Service Medal.
Pekoske holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Columbia University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
