Americans must renew our commitment and provide the first responders with the appropriate technologies to aid them in ending the drug overdose epidemic that has claimed nearly 850,000 lives over the last 20 years.
Research shows that drug overdose deaths involving stimulants like cocaine and psychostimulants with abuse potential (e.g., methamphetamine) have increased significantly and disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority populations.
Inspecting the millions of shipping containers moving through the world’s ports for explosives, drugs, and other contraband material is critical to international security.
Yet, keeping cargo flowing is vital for the global economy.
TeknoScan offers practical, rapid, and reliable substance trace detection and identification systems for port security applications.
However, these containers represent one of our nation’s greatest concerns for security and vulnerability.
Yet, only a small percentage of cargo containers are inspected for security threats.
The U.S. Congress mandated that all inbound cargo containers be 100 percent inspected for explosives, narcotics, and other threat substances by 2012 to improve security.
However, using current screening methods and technologies, this objective presents significant challenges. Since opening each container is not practical, it is necessary to introduce another screening method that will not disrupt the flow of commerce.
TeknoScan Systems complements imaging, radiation, and canine solutions with its trace detection technology to quickly detect and identify explosives, narcotics, and other threat substances.
TeknoScan offers these detection and identification systems for ports without the high capital cost of imaging systems. Many cargo containers can be quickly checked for target substances using a high-volume vacuum sampling system attached to a container’s ventilation port.
If a ventilation port is blocked or unavailable, a probe can be inserted through the container doors to extract air samples from the interior.
Marine Cargo Sampling & Detection Trial
A recent trial at a European seaport resulted in the interception of 1.5 tons of cocaine concealed in various cargo.
A high-volume sampling at the air vent of maritime containers through the door gasket allowed for the aspiration of airborne particles and vapors to be collected and detected onsite.
The TSI 3000 Drug Detector from TeknoScan Systems, a 2022 ‘ASTORS’ Platinum Homeland Security Award Winner, was mounted in a mobile van which facilitated movement and mobility within the seaport for rapid response for urgent inspection of newly landed containers.
X-ray imaging could not detect the contraband because of its good concealment in various commodities, fruits, frozen meat, etc.
Trace chemical detection as a primary or secondary screening tool with imaging technology can provide a powerful means of intercepting contraband in marine containers.
The TSI-3000 is a dual polarity ion mobility detector with fast switching – allowing for a wide range of drugs and explosives to be readily detected.
Any threat substances can be easily programmed into the TSI-3000 unit can be rapidly deployed onsite to screen suspect marine containers or enclosures like air cargo.

TSI-3000 COVID-19 Breathalyzer

The TeknoScan TSI-3000 is an innovative and novel breathalyzer for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are present on COVID-19’s infected people’s breath.

The testing procedure involves a testing subject to breath ten times on a nano-carbon coated sample card to trap and enrich the VOCs on the person’s breath, allowing for a rapid, less invasive, and safer collection method for healthcare workers as they are not directly exposed to the potentially deadly virus collection.

The sample card is then inserted in a heated inlet to vaporize the sample into a dual polarity ion mobility spectrometer with a front GC separation technique.

Sample analysis takes only 20 seconds, with the results displayed on the device’s screen.

In 2021 testing, over 900 people in India were screened using the TeknoScan TSI-3000 Analyzer Mobile Device with a 95% detection rate confirmed by PCR testing.

The method allows large numbers of people to be quickly screened with no use of expensive, consumable reagents, as the sample card can undergo sterilization in the heated inlet at 250oC, which eliminates any virus collected on the screen and allows the next sample to be taken.

The keynote address was provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO) Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner (DEAC) Diane Sabatino, who described the changes to CBP through the tragedy of 9/11 and the relentless commitment to its mission and ongoing investment in the latest technologies and innovations to protect our borders and Homeland.
The resounding theme of the DEAC’s remarks was her pride in the women and men of the CBP and their families who support them.
AST was also joined by Legendary Police Commissioner William Bratton, who spoke about his love for the City of New York, the Profession of law enforcement to which he has dedicated his life, and for which he continues to drive thought leadership and innovation.
New York City Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Department Kenneth Corey, came out to address Luncheon attendees and shared some of his experiences and the changes in policing he’s witnessed over his more than three decades of service.
FDNY Chief Joseph Jardin honored the men and women of the FDNY, not only those who currently serve but all of those who have selflessly served, with special recognition of those lost on 9/11.
Chief Jardin spoke about the continuing health battle of many following 9/11 with cancer and respiratory disease, yet now knowing the full consequences, would not have made a different decision to respond.
As Chief Jardin noted, mission-driven service is the lifeblood of every firefighter, volunteer, and sworn member, and has been so throughout the history of the Fire Service.
