Consistent with the Emergency Orders issued in New York and New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), has begun collecting tolls exclusively by electronic means and has suspended cash toll collection at the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel as of 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.
This change will last for as long as the Executive Orders remain in effect.
The Port Authority will post temporary signage, begin issuing e-alerts, and use social media to alert the region’s drivers of this change.
Motorists with E-ZPass will experience no change, using any open toll lane to have the toll debited from their prepaid E-ZPass account.
For motorists without E-ZPass, an image of the vehicle’s license plate will be captured and a notice seeking payment of the toll will be mailed to the registered owner the vehicle.
Motorists billed by mail will pay the amount of the standard cash toll; no additional fees will charged.
The change in toll collection only applies to Port Authority toll plazas that continue to collect cash: the George Washington Bridge’s upper and lower level toll plazas, and the toll lanes at the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
There will be no change to the toll operations at the Port Authority’s three Staten Island crossings (the Goethals and Bayonne bridges and Outerbridge Crossing) and the George Washington Bridge’s Palisades Interstate Parkway toll lanes, which have already adopted cashless tolling.
During this period, any discount programs that require in person administration by toll attendants will be temporarily suspended, such as the carpool discount program.
To assist drivers who would like to open an E-ZPass account at this time, the E-ZPass Customer Service Center will have representatives available by telephone at 800-333-8655 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
Outside of the call center’s business hours, an automated phone service and the E-ZPass NY web site (www.e-zpassny.com) provides self-help features 24/7.
