June 5, 2023 – In Breaking News – ABC News 7

On Monday, 7News learned new details about the timeline of when an F-16 jet made a loud sonic boom heard throughout the D.C. area and other jets intercepted a plane in which a pilot was slumped over at the controls, possibly due to lack of oxygen.

That pilot and three passengers were killed in a crash Sunday afternoon.

ABC News has learned that the F-16 jets authorized to make that sonic boom by going faster than the speed of sound intercepted the private Cessna Citation jet at 3:20 pm.

They were over Maryland about 20 miles northeast of Reagan National Airport.

“When they saw that the pilot, in this case, was slumped over the controls, that told them that this was not going to have a happy ending,” said Stephen Ganyard, an aviation expert and contributor to ABC News.

Animations from Flightradar24 show the Cessna Citation jet left Tennessee and headed towards New York.

It made a big turn as it approached where it was supposed to land at Long Island Macarthur Airport, and at some point, contact was lost.

Although the plane flew right over that airport, it did so at over 33 thousand feet, never descending per Flightradar 24 data.

Experts speculate the pilot and three passengers passed out from a lack of oxygen, called hypoxia.

“When they lost contact would give us a clue as to when they lost consciousness, assuming it was hypoxia which it would seem to be, and it would tell us a little more about the tragedy as it unfolded,” Ganyard said.
