U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro port of entry Monday caught a fugitive wanted by the authorities in Los Angeles on double homicide charges.
At about 12:30 a.m., on Nov. 7, a man arrived at the San Ysidro pedestrian border crossing, PedWest, and provided his valid California identification card to the CBP officer.
During the inspection, the CBP officer ran a routine query of law enforcement databases and discovered that the man had an active warrant for his arrest.
Using his fingerprints, CBP officers confirmed the man’s identity as 23-year-old Jose Rubio, a U.S. citizen.
CBP officers confirmed that he was the subject of a felony warrant for a double homicide. The warrant was issued at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department with bail set at $3.5 million.
“CBP officers perform the crucial job of inspecting every person that enters the United States,” said Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego.
“Their work impacts not just those in our local border community, but communities across the nation. Because of their diligence, this man will now face the charges against him.”
CBP officers took Rubio into custody; he was turned over to the custody of special agents with the FBI.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry.
CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
