On July 23, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) began its 94th annual Municipal Fire Training School at Brayton Fire Training Field.
Nearly 900 municipal and volunteer firefighters from around Texas and other states attended and chose from more than 30 courses, including wildland firefighting, basic emergency telecommunications, automobile extrication and rope rescue.
Because all wildland fires begin as local fires, volunteer and municipal firefighters are the first to respond and the first line of defense against wildfires.
A safe, capable, and equipped fire service is essential to handling fires at the local level and decreasing the amount of state assistance needed.
Providing this training for more Texas firefighters will build local responders’ capacity to stop wildfires before they become too large and threaten homes, communities and lives.
This training is vital to the state of Texas, especially considering the current conditions of drought and high temperatures throughout the state.

Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) provides grant funding for firefighters to attend training through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, a cost-share program funded by the Texas Legislature.
In addition to providing firefighting vehicles, equipment and clothing to volunteer fire departments, the funding covers the tuition for volunteer firefighters in Texas to attend TEEX’s annual school.
This year, TAMFS awarded $459,988 of tuition, food and lodging grants to more than 626 participants across 190 departments.
These departments represent nearly 50% of Texas counties around the state.
“Participants from across the state of Texas and beyond gather in College Station to participate in training,” explains TEEX Fire and Emergency Services Division Director Gordon Lohmeyer.
“The training offered encompasses subjects such as firefighting, hazardous materials response, rescue, EMS, fire officer, leadership and many other subject areas.”
“We offer basic to advanced-level training, facilitated by hundreds of guest instructors well-versed in their field of expertise.”
In addition to courses and training opportunities, the annual school includes a vendor show, memorial and a night of public firefighting demonstrations.
The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) is an internationally recognized leader in emergency response training, workforce training and technical assistance. Last year, TEEX served more than 174,000 people from every U.S. state and 109 countries worldwide.

As part of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium (NDPC) and home to the National Emergency Response and Recovery Training Center, TEEX has also been a leader in homeland security training since 1998, providing federally funded homeland security training and exercises for communities across the nation.
Beyond training and technical assistance, the agency also sponsors two statewide response teams, Texas A&M Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) System, and Texas A&M Public Works Response Team (TX-PWRT).
While TX-TF1, an elite urban search and rescue team, provides emergency response personnel and resources during disasters, TX-PWRT restores public utilities such as water, gas and electricity after disasters.

Chief Frank Leed is a Deputy Assistant Chief in the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), and currently serves as the acting chief of training.

The resounding theme of the DEAC’s remarks was her pride in the women and men of the CBP and their families who support them.
AST was also joined by Legendary Police Commissioner William Bratton, who spoke about his love for the City of New York, the Profession of law enforcement to which he has dedicated his life, and for which he continues to drive thought leadership and innovation.
New York City Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Department Kenneth Corey, came out to address Luncheon attendees and shared some of his experiences and the changes in policing he’s witnessed over his more than three decades of service.
FDNY Chief Joseph Jardin honored the men and women of the FDNY, not only those who currently serve but all of those who have selflessly served, with special recognition of those lost on 9/11.
Chief Jardin spoke about the continuing health battle of many following 9/11 with cancer and respiratory disease, yet now knowing the full consequences, would not have made a different decision to respond.
As Chief Jardin noted, mission-driven service is the lifeblood of every firefighter, volunteer, and sworn member, and has been so throughout the history of the Fire Service.
