FLIR Field Chemical Analysis Tool in the ‘ASTORS’ Awards (See Video)

FLIR Systems, Four-Time Winner of the 2016 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, including Top Honors for Best CBRNE Detection System is going for consecutive Wins in the 2017 ‘ASTORS’ Awards.

ASTOR platinumCivilian and military responders face scenarios ranging from intentional chemical attacks and accidental hazardous material (HAZMAT) releases to natural disasters and environmental monitoring or remediation efforts.

Responders step on-scene with a diverse toolkit – sometimes small and other times extensive.

It is critical to stay familiar with the equipment in the kit, because no single chemical detection tool can provide answers for every scenario.

While some detectors only indicate the presence of a chemical, others specifically identify what and how much of the threat is present, like a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (GC/MS).

GC/MS is an incredibly sensitive and highly specific tool commonly used in laboratory environments.

It can sense trace level chemicals other equipment can’t, while also providing the ability to positively identify the chemical.

But chemical emergencies don’t just happen in laboratories – they can happen anywhere.

Real-time chemical detection and identification in the field is critical to the CBRNE or HAZMAT response mission.

Confirmatory chemical identification enables responders to mitigate a threat and protect people and the environment from harm.

Knowing the exact identity of a chemical can provide evidence for law enforcement or intelligence that can lead to further discoveries, like finding the source of drugs not just the dealer.

Or the bomb-maker not just the terrorist deploying the bomb.

Chemical identification missions require devices with enhanced operability and chemical detection performance.

The FLIR Griffin™ G510 portable GC/MS chemical identifier meets these needs.

It equips responders with the ability to analyze vapor, liquid, and solid samples with minimal sample preparation and delivers enhanced confidence using quadrupole mass analyzer technology and the NIST MS Database for chemical identification.

Chemical response scenarios are complex, harsh environments.

The G510 is completely self-contained in a 36-pound device, including batteries, carrier gas, vacuum system, injector, touchscreen, and heated sample probe.

It is also the first IP65-rated (dust-tight and spray-resistant) portable GC/MS, adding flexibility to decontamination procedures.

There is no 40-pound external service module like other portable GC/MS systems and no 20-pound external pump under the bench like those seen in a laboratory.

Batteries last up to four hours and are hot swappable. While the G510 easily adapts for operation in a variety of vehicle platforms, the G510 is truly designed from the ground up to operate in the hot zone.

Hazmat technicians will find that it delivers lab-quality analysis.

(Grant Coffey, a retired Portland Fire & Rescue Hazmat Team Coordinator, College Fire Science Instructor, and CBRNE expert of nearly 40 years, provides a brief overview of what a GC-MS can do: types of chemicals it can identify, how it complements other detection technologies in the responder tool kit, and field applications it supports. First on-scene operators will appreciate that they don’t need a Ph.D. to use the FLIR Griffin™ G510.

Basic operator training is completed in only two hours, while expert training can be completed in a single day.

The user interface truly sets it apart from other portable GC/MS systems. It’s streamlined design and guided controls help the user select the mode of operation.

First responders must perform quickly and with limited dexterity when wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).

They are responsible for sample and data collection, and in some cases, real-time decision-making.

The G510 alerts the operator with visual alarm confirmation both on the handheld probe, as well as the on-board, 9” touchscreen.

The large touchscreen can be operated by a responder while wearing full PPE.

For over 15 years, FLIR has been focused on taking GC/MS out of the lab and into the field.

Our existing Griffin G400-series GC/MS product line provides a robust platform for vehicle-mounted chemical reconnaissance, sensitive site exploitation, building monitoring and protection, forensic analysis, environmental analysis, teaching, and research.

The Griffin G510 was the natural next step in our internal research and development efforts.

We focused on building a solution from the ground up that can support downrange applications – enabling military and civil responders to perform lab-quality analysis in the hot zone – and giving environmental monitoring and remediation teams the tool they need to analyze chemicals in real-time.

Hazardous environments demand the ultimate toolbox that includes confirmatory instrumentation like the FLIR Griffin G510 GC/MS.

It truly redefines performance, ease of use, and value for the responder toolkit.

FLIR in 2017 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program

The 2017 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, is organized to recognize the most distinguished vendors of Physical, IT, Port Security, Law Enforcement, First Responders, (Fire, EMT, Military, Support Services Vets, SBA, Medical Tech) as well as the Federal, State, County and Municipal Government Agencies – to acknowledge their outstanding efforts to ‘Keep our Nation Secure, One City at a Time.’

As an ‘ASTORS’ competitor, the FLIR Griffin G510 will be competing against the industries leading providers of Innovative CBRNE Detection Systems.

American Security Today will be holding the 2017 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Presentation Luncheon at 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m, Wednesday, November 15th at ISC East, the Northeast’s largest security industry event, in the Jacob Javits Exhibition Center in New York City.

At ISC East you will have the chance to meet with technical reps from over 225 leading brands in the security industry, allowing you to find out about new products and stay ahead of the competition.
