FLIR Receives $23M Air Force Order for Centaur UGVs (Multi-Video)

U.S. Air Force teams will use the FLIR Centaur robot to help disarm improvised explosive devices, unexploded ordnance, and perform similar hazardous tasks. Multiple sensors and payloads can be added to the 160-lb. Centaur to support other missions.
Whether it’s a roadside bomb on the battlefield, a suspicious package on the subway, or a potential HAZMAT situation, our robots help keep troops, first responders, and the public safe. Pictured here, U.S. Air Force teams will use the FLIR Centaur robot to help disarm improvised explosive devices, unexploded ordnance, and perform similar hazardous tasks. FLIR Systems, a Winner in the Annual ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program for Four Consecutive Years, has received an order for the U.S. Air Force, for more than 180 of the company’s Centaur™ unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), plus spares.

The $23 million contract is sourced through the Department of Defense (DoD) Man Transportable Robotic System Increment II (MTRS Inc II) program.

In 2017, the U.S. Army chose FLIR Systems’ legacy business, Endeavor Robotics, as its medium-sized robot provider for MTRS Inc II.

The company created a newly designed UGV, Centaur, as its MTRS Inc II solution.

FLIR has begun delivering Centaur units to the Army under that multi-year program of record, which upon award was valued at up to $158 million, including options.

Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams will use the FLIR Centaur to assist in disarming improvised explosive devices (IEDs), unexploded ordnance, and similar hazardous tasks.

Multiple sensors and payloads can be added to Centaur to support other missions.

“Centaur gives operators a highly versatile, man-transportable UGV that helps saves lives by keeping humans away from danger,” explained David Ray, president of the Government and Defense Business Unit at FLIR.

FLIR Centaur is the Man Transportable Robotic System Increment II (MTRS Inc II) solution.

“We’re pleased the Air Force has chosen Centaur as its mid-sized robot solution and that the MTRS Inc II program can serve as an efficient procurement vehicle.”

The FLIR Centaur is a remotely operated, medium-sized UGV system that provides a standoff capability to detect, confirm, identify, and dispose of hazards.

Weighing roughly 160 pounds, the open-architected robot features an advanced EO/IR camera suite, a manipulator arm that reaches more than six feet, and the ability to climb stairs.

The fully-IOP compliant, open architected robot has a standard chassis and modular mission payloads in support of current and future CBRNE detection and other missions.

Centaur is currently only available to the United States DOD, and supports Engineers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) and EOD Soldiers. Shipments are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020.

These orders come on the heels of a U.S. Army Heavyweight Robot contract for 350 Worth Up to $109M in December 2019 when FLIR Systems was likewise chosen for the United States (U.S.) Army’s Common Robotic System-Heavy (CRS-H) program.

(Let Tom Frost, GM of FLIR Unmanned Ground Systems business, walk you through the impressive capabilities of the #FLIR Kobra Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). The five-year production CRS-H contract to build upwards of 350 unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) is worth up to $109 million.

The CRS-H program will give the Army a ‘program of record’ to build and sustain a fleet of large UGVs for years to come.

The CRS-H platform calls for a robot weighing up to 700 pounds.

Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units will use the system to perform a range of missions, such as disarming vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), unexploded ordnance,  or related heavy-duty tasks. A variety of sensors and payloads also can be added to the UGV to support other missions.

“We are pleased to be selected for the U.S. Army’s CRS-H program and deliver lifesaving robotic technology to our soldiers,” said Jim Cannon, president and CEO at FLIR.

“This award exemplifies why we acquired Endeavor Robotics earlier this year — to capture strategic programs of record that enable us to integrate advanced solutions for the warfighter, give us the fuel to grow our business, and strengthen our position as a leader in unmanned systems.”

Over several months and two rounds of testing, the Army compared the FLIR Kobra with other vendor systems. Entrants were evaluated on robot reliability, maneuverability, and usability, among other factors before Kobra was selected as the winner.

David Ray, President of FLIR Government and Defense Business Unit

“Our CRS-H platform will give soldiers a powerful, extremely mobile, yet highly transportable UGV, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice to keep them out of harm’s way,” added Ray.

“This win is a testament to our employees who’ve designed such an advanced, multi-mission UGV. We look forward to working with the Army to get this robot into the field and deployed with our warfighters.”

FLIR Kobra delivers unmatched strength, power, and payload support in an easy-to-operate robot package, with a lift capacity of 330 lbs. (150 kg.) and can stretch up to eleven-and-a-half feet to access hard-to-reach places.

Ready for indoor and outdoor use, Kobra maintains mobility on tough terrain and can overcome obstacles such as jersey barriers.

FLIR UGS has delivered more than 7,000 combat-proven robots to customers in over 55 countries, and partners with U.S. and international defense forces, law enforcement, public safety, energy and industrial users to design technologically advanced robots that support a wide range of missions.

Whether it’s a roadside bomb on the battlefield, a suspicious package on the subway, or a potential HAZMAT situation, FLIR robots help keep troops, first responders, and the public safe.
