Veterans and military personnel who are preparing for the transition to civilian life are exceptionally positioned to step into high-paying technology careers.

Their integrity, mental toughness, willingness to take direction, and ability to stay calm under pressure — all of which stem from their military training — are all highly sought-after qualities in the tech world.

Leveraging these qualities to obtain a position, however, requires developing the right kind of resume.

Translating Relevant Work Experience

To build a great resume, veterans and military personnel must present their military experience in a way that reveals its value in a non-military setting. This involves translating military language into a civilian world equivalent.

For example, the titles given in the military, such as E-6 or Staff Sergeant, will not be easily understood by most civilian recruiters or hiring managers. Translating the role and its duties to an appropriate civilian title, such as manager or team leader, is an important part of building a standout post-military resume.

Extracting the relevant skills from military service is also important. For example, a soldier’s involvement in his or her unit demands a wide range of relevant skills, including collaboration skills, communications skills, logistics skills, and interpersonal skills.

Attention to detail is another skill taught in the military that has a valuable application in the tech world.

Focusing on the strengths that were required to perform well in the military, and showing how those strengths will be an asset in the civilian workplace, is the key to capitalizing on military experience.

Obtaining the Right Tech Training

To borrow some language from the Air Force, I believe those transitioning from military service to technology careers should aim high. Unfortunately, too many veterans engage in transition programs that provide only the most basic tech training.

The result is veterans with extraordinary capabilities being taught skills that provide access to only the lowest paying tech jobs.

As someone who has trained people for the highest-paying tech jobs for more than two decades, I know that veterans are capable of learning the skills necessary to be successful in top-level tech positions.

The key to attaining those positions is taking advantage of solid tech training programs.

The best training programs will focus on the areas of the industry that are most in demand.

For example, a cloud security architect is one of the highest-paying tech jobs in today’s market. The mindset needed for systems security is something that is taught in many military positions.

By getting the appropriate technical training, military veterans can easily step into cloud security positions.

As veterans seek out the best tech programs, they should look for those that go beyond tech skills to also include the business skills that are necessary for success. These include executive presence, presentation, sales, business acumen, and emotional intelligence.

My experience training cloud architects, another high-paying tech position, has shown me that the best positions go to those who bring both tech and business skills.

Tech skills will qualify you for the job, but business acumen, executive presence, and emotional intelligence will get you the job.

For those transitioning out of military life, obtaining a high-paying tech job is a very real possibility. They bring sought-after skills, including mental toughness, dedication, and grit, that are not readily found among those whose training is limited to the world of technology.

When the skills learned in the military can be supplemented with training in the right business skills and the most sought-after tech skills, the result is a resume that will open the door to high-paying technology positions.
