Laredo Sector Border Patrol Updates, Recent Rescues & New Leader

Laredo Sector Border Patrol recently selected Michael S. Lata as the newly appointed Patrol Agent in Charge of the Laredo North Border Patrol Station.

The Laredo North Station is the largest station in Laredo Sector.

Laredo North Station’s daily duties include line watch, sign cutting, checkpoint operations, the use of all-terrain vehicles and freight train checks.

The Laredo North Station also operates one of the largest Border Patrol checkpoints, which is located on Interstate Highway 35.

Laredo Sector Border Patrol Recent Activities Include

Border Patrol agents assigned to the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) Unit rescued a total of seven illegal aliens last week.

Four subjects in a ranch northwest of Laredo, Texas, had resorted to calling 911 for assistance after they became lost in the brush.

One of the subjects was treated by a Border Patrol Emergency Medical Technician for heat exhaustion. The rest of the subjects were found in good health and determined to be from the country of Mexico.

Later that same day, Border Patrol agents assigned to the BORSTAR Unit along with the assistance of a CBP Air and Marine Operations helicopter, rescued one illegal alien in a ranch northwest of Laredo, Texas.

The subject resorted to calling 911 for assistance after he became lost in the brush.

The illegal alien was found in good health and determined to be from the country of Guatemala.

Later that afternoon, Border Patrol agents assigned to the BORSTAR Unit rescued one illegal alien in a ranch northwest of Laredo, Texas.

A fourth event took place the following day, as Border Patrol agents assigned to the BORSTAR Unit rescued one illegal alien in a ranch northwest of Laredo, Texas.

The illegal alien was found severely dehydrated and was administered with Intravenous Fluid therapy (IV) in the field by a Border Patrol Emergency Medical Technician.

The illegal alien responded well to the initial care and determined to be from the country of Mexico.

The Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) Unit was created in response to the growing number of injuries to Border Patrol agents and illegal alien deaths along our nation’s borders.

Border Patrol agents assigned to BORSTAR specialize in various search and rescue techniques, tactical medicine, technical rescue, land navigation, communication, swift-water rescue, and air operations.

The Laredo Sector Border Patrol will continue to warn against the dangers of people crossing illegally into the United States through dangerous environmental conditions.

The Border Safety Initiative (BSI) is a humanitarian, bi-national strategy designed to reduce illegal alien deaths, educate and inform potential illegal aliens of the dangers and hazards of crossing the border illegally, and to respond to those who are in life-threatening situations.

Laredo Border Patrol Sector currently has over 1,600 Border Patrol Agents and support personnel.

Mr. Lata brings with him over 20 years of Border Patrol service which started in 1997 in El Centro California. 

Prior to taking charge at the Laredo North Station, Michael S. Lata was the Deputy Patrol Agent in Charge at the Rio Grande City Station in the Rio Grande Valley Sector.

Mr. Lata served in various leadership positions prior to his arrival in Laredo, which included: Attaché for Customs and Border Protection in East Africa, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent of the Blaine Sector Border Patrol, Assistant Chief of Special Operations at Border Patrol Headquarters, and CBP Congressional Liaison Officer.

While in his leadership roles, Mr. Lata was instrumental in the implementation of significant programs and operations critical to border security such as the Patrol Canine Program and Operation Jump Start, where twenty-thousand National Guard members were deployed to the U.S./Mexico Border.

Mr. Lata holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Criminology from Northern Illinois University.
