NEC Corporation of America is pleased to announce that the NEC I:Delight Identity Platform Software has been recognized with the 2021 Platinum Homeland Security Award for Best Integrated Security Management System, as well as taking home a coveted 2021 Excellence in National Security for Traveler Security Management, in the 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program.

Star Alliance, one of the world’s largest airline alliances, connecting customers of prominent airlines like Lufthansa, United Airlines, and Air Canada, late last year launched Star Alliance Biometrics, powered by NEC technology, to provide loyalty customers a better path through airports across the world.

Star Alliance plans to make the Star Alliance Biometrics service available to all 26 of its member airlines, and NEC Corporation is proud to be the technology partner powering the service with NEC I:Delight identity platform software.

(The Star Alliance Biometrics identity management platform provides travelers with a seamless curb-to-gate, #touchless experience using NEC I:Delight. This technology enables travelers simply create a single #DigitalID to pass through the airport from check-in, bag drop, security checkpoints to boarding, and beyond. A service that benefits everyone from passengers to TSA agents, NEC’s I:Delight Identity Platform offers a contactless mechanism that ultimately makes the airport experience more hygienic, something we’re all grateful for as the fight against COVID-19 rages on.

Travelers who opt-in to use the service simply check-in at each kiosk with a selfie rather than handling physical documents face-to-face with airport security personnel.

NEC I-Delight
NEC I:Delight revolutionizes the customer experience by streamlining your physical and digital identities into a trusted ecosystem, creating a unified experience.

Star Alliance Loyalty program members may opt-in using an app to scan their passports and snap a selfie, then NEC technology validates the authenticity of the passport and the traveler’s biometrics to prevent spoofing or identity theft.

Its uses go beyond public health, as biometrics bring an increased level of security to the entire airport travel experience.

Passengers simply face an integrated camera in a kiosk at security zones and boarding gates.

In the blink of an eye, the identity platform checks passengers against the saved flight manifest data, quickly producing a prompt for the traveler to continue through the checkpoint or to check in with security or an airline agent.

Enroll only once

  • Passengers enroll only once and can then use the service with any participating airline at any participating airport.

  • Once registered, they can pass through both security access and boarding gates in a touchless manner- an important health and hygiene safety measure in times of COVID-19.

  • In the future, this service will be extended to additional airport touchpoints, such as baggage drop and VIP lounges.

Keep the mask on

  • In line with the requirement in many airport terminals to wear a mask, it is unnecessary to remove the mask for the identity check.

Safe and secure

  • From the outset, Star Alliance has put a strong focus on data security and on putting customers in control of their data: Passengers can select exactly which airlines and airports they choose to allow access to their biometric data.

  • Personal data, such as a photo and other identification details, are encrypted and safely stored within the platform in compliance with European Data Privacy and Security laws, and storage of such data is kept to the absolute minimum – for example, no customer names are stored.

NEC I:Delight platform capabilities can also be extended to assist with wayfinding in airports and enable face pay for purchases at duty-free stores.

Face Pay uses the same NEC protections for secure access to a participant’s account.

Beyond the airport, the entire travel ecosystem can be enhanced with I:Delight by implementing face recognition in hospitality, retail, entertainment, car rental, and other transportation.

Technology truly made for its time; the NEC face matching algorithm has proven its accuracy even with a face mask, and identity verification can occur in as little as 1.5 seconds –much faster and more accurate than human analysis with the face mask lowered.

Biometrics-powered security is the future of travel, one where passengers seamlessly navigate across a global network with a single secure digital ID.
