Chief Kenneth E. Corey, who is being Recognized for more than 30 Years of Service to the City of New York in the 2022 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program for Excellence in Public Safety, began his career with the New York City Police Department in 1988 as a cadet.
Now, as the Chief of Department, he is responsible for the coordination and management of the agency’s operational bureaus. With an emphasis on neighborhood policing, customer service, and the improved health and wellness of officers, he is committed to delivering a safer New York City.
In his prior assignment as the Chief of Training, he was responsible for the creation, delivery, and supervision of training programs for police officer recruits, executive and management level employees, new civilian employees, and other entry-level personnel, as well as all continuing professional training for the nation’s largest police agency.

In this role, he served as an advisor to the Police Commissioner and represented the agency on all training matters, introducing new content and delivery methods.
He is a board member of the New York State Metropolitan Police Training Council and the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council.
As the Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Staten Island, Chief Corey was applauded for his community engagement strategies and strengthening relationships between the NYPD and traditionally marginalized communities.
Under his leadership, shooting incidents and homicides decreased by more than 50%, while major crimes decreased by 11%.
While assigned as the Commanding Officer of the First Deputy Commissioner’s Office, he was responsible for implementing the department’s 2015 re-engineering process.
He was also entrusted by then Commissioner William J. Bratton, who is also being Recognized in the 2022 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Program, with overhauling the department’s investigation of officer-involved shootings, which resulted in the creation of the Force Investigation Division.
Chief Corey has commanded the Medical Division, the 76th Precinct, and the Investigations Units of both the Intelligence Division and Patrol Borough Brooklyn South. He served as the Executive Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South and the 72nd Precinct, and held leadership roles within the Organized Crime Control Bureau.
His formative years were spent as a patrol officer in the 70th Precinct.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Chief Corey attended Xaverian High School, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from Pace University and a Masters of Public Administration degree from Marist College.
He is a graduate of the Major Cities Chiefs Association Police Executive Leadership Institute. He is also an Adjunct Professor at St. John’s University.
He currently resides in Staten Island. He and his wife, Barbara, are the proud parents of Morgan and Taylor.
On October 20, 2022, Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell announced that Chief of Department Corey, who has served since January as the department’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, has decided he will retire at the end of November.
“From day one, I have seen Chief Corey conduct himself with unparalleled integrity, and I have marveled at his strength and vision,” said Commissioner Sewell.
“Chief Corey has been a beacon of excellence for officers in every rank – at every station.”
“The light of his leadership will remain a shining guide forward for all of us, and his contributions to our profession will be everlasting.”
In disclosing his decision to the department’s executive staff, and to those serving under him in the Chief of Department’s Office, Chief Corey described the moment as bittersweet.
“Policing is among the great passions in my life,” Chief Corey said, “and I have always committed myself to doing everything possible to improve policing in New York City.”
“I have now been presented with an opportunity to improve policing on a national – and even international – level. It was an opportunity I simply could not allow to pass.”
“I have spent more than three decades serving New York City, and I will miss the NYPD every day. But I know the department is well-positioned under the leadership of Commissioner Sewell.”
