With flags flown at half staff behind them, members of the community Monday visited a memorial to pay their respects to officer Jorge David Alvarado, who was fatally shot Friday.

The memorial set up in front of the Salinas Police Department continued to grow Monday morning, as members of the community stopped by to leave flowers and take photos.

The flags at the department were flying at half staff in honor and memory of Alvarado. Monterey County said Saturday it will fly its flags at half staff and Gov. Gavin Newsom Sunday ordered the flags at the California State Capitol be flown at half staff.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Officer Jorge Alvarado’s family, friends, coworkers, and the community of Salinas as they mourn his loss in a senseless act of violence,” Newsom said in a statement.

“Officer Alvarado died a hero and his selfless sacrifice while protecting the community he served will always be remembered.”

Rep. Jimmy Panetta visited the memorial dedicated to Alvarado on Sunday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with fallen Salinas Police Officer Jorge Alvarado, his family, and his brethren in blue, but they are nowhere near enough,” Panetta said in a prepared statement.

“Every day we must recognize the service and sacrifice of those who run toward danger, not away from it, to protect our home.”
