Drone Aviation, a manufacturer of tethered drones and lighter-than-air aerostats, plus a Finalist in the 2018 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, reports a steady incline in successful deployments of the company’s FUSE Tether System (FUSE) by law enforcement agency’s nationwide.
State and local law enforcement are increasingly utilizing the FUSE Tether System (FUSE) to enhance security at a growing number of large public outdoor events and venues for both day and nighttime operations.

What is FUSE
A Tether Kit for Unlimited Flight Time
FUSE is the most cost-effective tethered drone option available because it supports the most widely adopted drones from DJI and allows you to tether them for unlimited and reliable flight time.
The FUSE tether system allows you to operate from ground power, using 110v shore power or a Honda 2000i genset.
The automatic tether tension management system means that our smart winch will offer better control in stronger winds for flights up to 200 ft.
The FUSE tether system is not a simple power cable on the ground but rather has continuous power distribution monitoring that can provide a safe landing in the event of a ground power loss by using the vehicle’s onboard battery backup.

Drone Battery Limitations
No matter how fast battery technology improves, the simple fact is that drone flight duration is limited by the need to swap batteries.
Spare batteries and charging hubs make it possible to spend less time on the ground before getting back in the air, but the FUSE Tether System can keep a Matrice 200 series drone or a DJI Inspire flying for hours, or even indefinitely.
That’s highly beneficial for emergency personnel using a drone to help secure a perimeter, or serve as a temporary cell tower or radio relay.
With the FUSE system – you control the drone – and the system feeds the tether and automatically keeps it taught.
In fact, a tethered drone actually has more resistance to crosswinds than a free-flying drone.

Stay Aloft as Long as You Need
Some jobs just require a long time in the air.
Fly your Matrice for hours using the tether system, then release it and fly off batteries for areas that the tether won’t reach.
You also can relocate the tether system to expand the area covered.
Serving Emergency Teams
In remote areas, or in the aftermath of a disaster, power for charging batteries may not be available.
With a generator and the tether, or just with electrical current from your car or truck and the FUSE Tether System, you can keep the drone aloft for hours.
Perhaps normal communications are unavailable.
A properly equipped drone may be used as a temporary cell tower or for relaying radio signals. In that case, staying aloft is critical, and only the tether lets you do it.
After a terrorist attack or in a hostage situation, keeping an eye out around a base of operations becomes necessary.
Again, it’s a tethered drone that provides an uninterrupted, prolonged view from an effective altitude.
An ‘Eye in the Sky’
For a crime scene, a derailment, an air crash, a flood, a festival with a sea of attendees — a FUSE tethered drone can stay aloft for hours and send video to transmitting equipment in a control center mobile or field unit.
A tethered drone can see a swollen river far beyond the blockades set up by emergency teams, and drones equipped with zoom lens cameras can stay close to the action.
Distributed by partners such as Drone Nerds and in collaboration with state and local first responders and law enforcement partners, FUSE is expanding the operational footprint of tethered operations into nighttime missions.
For example, FUSE flight operations recently provided support to Arizona and Florida-based law enforcement departments respectively, for safety monitoring of festivals and an array of large outdoor gatherings.

The Oro Valley Police department in Arizona has completed several operational flights utilizing FUSE, highlighted by its use at a recent large outdoor music festival attended by over 8,000 music fans.
Additionally, Drone Aviation’s FUSE Tether system was successfully utilized by a South Florida Police Department in October, for nighttime operations during a major Halloween festival to evaluate the effectiveness of several new crowd safety monitoring technologies including persistent tethered unmanned aerial systems.
“Increased use of FUSE further demonstrates our successful efforts to adapt our proven, military-grade tether technology to the needs of local law enforcement where easy to use, long-duration drone operation can significantly enhance public safety at large outdoor events,” said Dan Erdberg, President of Drone Aviation.
“We look forward to working with our growing network of partners and affiliates to increase the awareness and deployment of tethered drones by those organizations dedicated to enhancing the safety of our families and communities.”
The FUSE Tether System is powered by a proprietary mix of hardware and software in a customized power pack and an Automated Smart Tension Control Winch Case with 200 feet of tether supporting 110-volt ground power sources such as portable generators.

With the FUSE tethering system, DJI M200 users can dramatically and cost-effectively increase drone flight time with uninterrupted power from the ground while benefiting from improved safety.
Safety is enhanced by FUSE’s use of an onboard backup power pack and tether connected to the Company’s proprietary automatic tether tension management system.
FUSE is based on the same military-grade advanced technology utilized in the Company’s tethered products sold to the U.S. Department of Defense.
