The Silencing of Free Speech – From a Public Safety Perspective

Guest Editorial by Charles Werner, DirectorDRONERESPONDERS

The true threat to our democracy is the silencing of free speech.

Increasingly, people with opposing views are being harassed, protested against, and/or canceled.

Much of this attack on free speech is being propagated, communicated, and planned over social media.

Social media offers many opportunities to spread lies and hatred anonymously without consequence when people are hurt, or destruction occurs. More often, there are messages of rage and a lack of empathy, even on insignificant issues.

Often these simple differences turn into social media “shouting matches” with vulgar language and bullying.

I have stopped reading social media messages because they are so evil, incite hatred and influence civil unrest.

(“Cancel culture” puts a modern spin on the age-old social dynamics of public shaming. Today, it’s also often associated with accountability and social justice. Courtesy of Newsy, Scripps News, and YouTube. Posted on Jan 14, 2022.)

I consider myself open-minded, objective, and interested in opposing views. Throughout my career in public safety, I have experienced many great ideas from opposing views resulting in better decisions on policy and operations through compromise and consensus.

In life, it is not realistic to believe that a single view is the only view.

When not allowing opposing views, everyone misses out on many ways to improve an original idea or thought. Finding a middle ground through compromise builds buy-in, unites people, and lessens division.

When college campuses no longer allow opposing views, they lose the very purpose of learning, growing, and collaborating.

The art of compromise has been one of the hallmarks of our nation’s strength.

One of Steven Covey’s principles of effective leadership worth noting is, “Seek first to understand then to be understood.”

This philosophy of silencing the thoughts and opinions of others is dangerous and leads to an ever-expanding division in our country.

A great deal of this rhetoric and social media messaging is being injected by foreign adversaries whose main intent is to divide, conquer and lessen the strength of our country on the global stage.

The quote from Winston Churchill (a British statesman, soldier, and writer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice), “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”, remains true today.

(Across the country, statues and historical symbols are down, and this movement shows no signs of stopping. Too often, the choice has been not to learn from previous actions but rather to erase history and miss an opportunity to contextualize and learn from previous mistakes.

Given the current direction, we are doomed to repeat these injustices.

When looking back at the actions of Adolf Hitler and similar dictators, the first thing that begins the destruction of democracy is the loss of free speech followed by the absence of a challenging press.

Today, more people fear to question/challenge what they are told and follow blindly like a flock of sheep.

This trend allows foreign adversaries or those with evil intent to create armies of people to fight each other, often leading to protests, destruction, and death.

(For example, riots in France earlier this month showed cars engulfed in flames, showrooms being vandalized & tear gas thrown open on protesters. The French president highlighted the role of social media as unrest spread across the country after the police shooting of a teenage boy near Paris. Courtesy of Guardian News and YouTube. Posted on Jun 30, 2023.)

This will be (if not already) exacerbated by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media bots spreading propaganda to incite civil unrest through messages which appear to be from a credible source.

AI offers new ways to manipulate data, video, and messaging.

As has been stated by many, the value/danger of AI depends on the intent of its use.

(A fake image of a Pentagon explosion went viral, briefly causing panic on Twitter – and even spooked the markets. Courtesy of MSNBC and YouTube. Posted on May 23, 2023.)

Soon, if nothing is done, our country will allow the loss of free thinking, free speech, and our nation’s position as a global leader will be jeopardized.

Our nation has been built on free thinkers willing to challenge the status quo and innovate by those motivated to achieve greatness.

The current thinking by many seems to be that mediocrity is the new norm and that it’s better to follow, do as directed, and accept the status quo.

As free speech is silenced, division grows, and tensions rise, our country loses its soul and may be headed for another civil war.

When there is no room for discussion, no desire to understand other views, and people are silenced, the result will be the end of democracy replaced by tyranny.
