NEC IPIDS solution

NEC’s innovative fiber optic sensing technology was selected as the 2022 Platinum ‘ASTORS’ Award Winner for Best Perimeter Protection Solution.

NEC’s state-of-the-art IPIDS solution combines Machine Learning-based Artificial Intelligence to detect, locate and prevent physical threats to infrastructure.

NEC’s IPIDS solution works to detect physical border and facility breaches by using highly adaptive and responsive fiber optic sensing and self-modifying Machine Learning (ML)-based Artificial Intelligence (AI).

When the system’s centrally located ‘interrogator’, which transmits light into and from optical fibers, detects a disturbance, ML-based artificial intelligence immediately identifies and pinpoints the intrusion so appropriate action can quickly be taken.

An intuitive graphical user interface provides straight forward monitoring of existing or previously non-securable borders and facility perimeters.

Real-time displays of perimeter maps also display locations of detected intrusions.

Data from such intrusions, including date, time, location, and classification, can be integrated to immediately mobilize security resources or be stored for future use and analysis.

IPIDS systems are deployed over perimeters, borders, and other boundaries of critical resources to detect, locate, and prevent physical threats, such as active shooters, terrorists, and kidnappers.

NEC’s IPIDS solution is a significant enhancement to public safety and national security in the U.S.,” explains Dr. Kathleen Kiernan, President of NEC NSS, a subsidiary of NEC Corporation of America.

“Thanks to years of research and technical innovation, a digital security system can now provide real-time situational awareness and threat detection to a level never seen before.”

NEC’s IPIDS technical innovation provides digital, real-time, ubiquitous, accurate, and robust situational awareness to security & safety stewards.

Simultaneously, IPIDS saves valuable security resources, such as security personnel, and reduces the need for maintenance, service, and the total cost of ownership, even in adverse environments.

For example, NEC’s IPIDS solution was recently deployed on the campus perimeter of a K-12 school in the U.S., which had increasing concerns about unauthorized breaches.

The campus comprises dense wildlife and foot traffic, and the deployment of multitudes of electronic sensors was prohibitive. More importantly, it would detract from the school’s primary mission: to educate.

NEC’s IPIDS was selected for the application because of its integrability with the client’s existing optical fiber-based IT infrastructure, its ability to detect and locate perimeter intrusions to within a few feet via optical fiber sensing, automatically to cue nearby video cameras, apply deep learning-based AI to video, and send alerts to school security stewards via unified communication.

NEC NSS was also recognized for groundbreaking achievements in public safety and security solutions across a variety of categories in 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Program. Pictured here, Former Police Commissioner Bill Bratton with Dr. Kathleen Kiernan, President of NEC NSS, and TSA Administrator David Pekoske.

IPIDS can be seamlessly integrated via its agnostic application programming interface into federal, state, and local government and education systems, such as electronic security systems, electronic harbor security systems, and linear ground detection systems, providing physical security for antiterrorism, force protection, and integrated base defense.

“This IPIDS application brought immense value to public safety by detecting potential intrusion through its deployment over the perimeter of a crowded area,” added Dr. Kiernan.

“It is a true game changer for threat detection.”

The Annual ‘ASTORS’ Awards Program is designed to honor distinguished government and vendor solutions that deliver enhanced value, benefit, and intelligence to end-users in a variety of government, homeland security, enterprise, and public safety vertical markets.

“Amid rising threats to public safety, we appreciate American Security Today for recognizing the value NEC NSS brings to homeland security in the United States,” concluded Dr. Kiernan.

We are honored to be acknowledged by a leading security media organization for our advanced technology solutions.”

In addition to the award for IPIDS, NEC NSS received awards across various categories relating to security technology, including a much coveted 2022 ‘ASTORS’ Platinum Level Industry Leadership and Innovation Award.

NEC NSS was also recognized with 2022 ‘ASTORS’ Awards for the Best Vehicle Security Entrance Control Solution, Best Facial/Iris Recognition Solution Award, Best Mobile Security Solution, Best Biometric Reader Solution, and Best Access Control & Authentication Solution, respectively.

nec nssBased in Arlington, Va., NEC NSS is focused on deploying ground-breaking solutions for government use, including end-to-end systems for access control and security, Next Gen identity verification, scene processing, advanced analytics, and intrusion detection.

NSS’s integrated hardware and software solutions support some of the U.S. government’s most critical missions, including those of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of State (DOS), Department of Justice (DOJ), and the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC).
