The gunman who opened fire injuring eight people at Mayfair mall in Wauwatosa remains at large, Wauwatosa police said Saturday morning.
“Investigators are working tirelessly to identify and apprehend the suspect from yesterday’s shooting at Mayfair Mall,” the department tweeted about 11 a.m. Saturday morning. “We ask that any witnesses to the incident please contact the Wauwatosa Police Department at 414-471-8430.”
The gunman opened fire at Mayfair Friday afternoon, wounding seven adults and one teenager, officials said.
Witnesses described the shooter as a white male in his 20s or 30s, Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said at a news conference just before 6 p.m.
“When emergency personnel arrived, the shooter was no longer at the scene,” Weber said earlier.

Later Friday night the department provided its first explanation of what may have prompted the shooting.
“Preliminary investigation has led us to believe that this shooting was not a random act, and was the result of an altercation,” police said.
“The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time,” Weber said of the victims. “Everybody was alive at that time, though, so there’s not been any fatalities that I’m aware of.”
The mall was cleared and secure as of 9:30 p.m., police said. Investigators were continuing to interview witnesses and victims.
The mall will be closed Saturday and investigators will remain there overnight, police said.

Friday night, the department said:
“Our thoughts go out to our community, especially those who were injured and affected by the incident today. Events like this shake a community, and we remain committed to protecting those who live in and visit Wauwatosa.”
