Lumina Analytics, LLC, is a U.S.-based technology company that specializes in engineering cutting-edge solutions to the challenges of weeding through the world wide open-source web to identify critical risk information, to provide a proactive force for good.
RadianceSM, developed by Lumina, is a comprehensive enterprise search tool that uses Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), which transforms publicly available data into timely, actionable intelligence, to help their clients anticipate, understand, manage and mitigate risk.
Whether the challenge is preventing school attacks by individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors online, warding off a corporate reputational crisis by detecting insider threats, identifying potential domestic terror attacks planned on social media, or finding potential suicide victims in time to get them the help they so desperately require, Radiance is a game-changer in keeping people and places safe.
“The power of Radiance is two-fold – its ability to ingest massive amounts of unstructured, open source data and its real-time ability to analyze that information to predict and prevent organizational risks and threats,” explains Allan Martin, Lumina Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board.
“It was the tragedy of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting that catalyzed our efforts and illuminated our vocation.”
“Ever since, we have developed our technology in line with this mission and attuned to its fundamental importance.”
“Recognizing that technology is a force for good, Lumina exists to keep people and places safe and secure, and this AI-driven solution will immediately transform how organizations think about risk management and risk mitigation.”
Behavioral Affinity Models. Data Noise Solved.
Data noise is a major obstacle for most Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) open source social listening tools.
Radiance has been optimized to screen for specific behaviors using Lumina’s proprietary and configurable Behavioral Affinity Models data filters (BAMs, which are lists of terms, phrases, and expressions), which have innovated a new and unprecedented way to solve these obstacles.
Keywords are run through open-source intelligence (OS-INT) and filtered by BAMs, which are created through subject matter expertise and leveraging supervised machine learning.
Each BAM is a collection of selectors – terms, phrases, and expressions – that are representative of a specific area of risk or interest.
Names can likewise be entered into Radiance to be correlated with content related to 25 different risk factors (BAMs), to identify potential risk and satisfy the requirements for big data due diligence.
Searches provide near-instant results, delivering meaningful, actionable intelligence to identify and prevent risk.
“In the Radiance platform, we’ve develop a unique technology that searches the open internet deeply and comprehensively,” said Chief Data Scientist and Co-Founder Morten Middelfart.
“Radiance automates internet searches to identify risks and threats in ways that have not been previously possible, helping our clients to protect what matters most.”
“We constantly hear people say, ‘We have so much data, but what can we do with it?’ Radiance solves that problem by ingesting, integrating, correlating and analyzing disparate datasets.”
“It takes data never designed to identify risk, and prioritizes it – giving our clients an unbiased and fully auditable understanding of human behavior and associated threats.”
He added that Radiance’s BRPs solve for the “data noise” obstacle associated with other OS-INT SaaS solutions.
In addition, Radiance drastically outperform existing Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches to identify names of persons or entities in unstructured data.
Radiance performed at a 93.1 percent accuracy level on unstructured, improperly cased documents such as HTML, JSON or computer code and other so-called messy documents compared to 0 percent for Stanford Named Entity Recognizer (NER) and other popular open-source NLP software.
Additionally, the BRPs generated with Lumina’s machine learning are “human readable,” making them fully auditable as well.
Deep Web Data Aggregation Like No Other.
Conventional technologies rely on a single platform or social media API. Not Radiance, which uses continuous deep-web extraction to ingest all open source data.
With Radiance, the volumes of publicly available electronic information are cleaned and prioritized, yielding relevant insights into high-risk individuals, entities, events, or sources by aggregating all the data scattered across the Internet and measuring it against configurable BAMs.
Proprietary Risk Databases.
Beyond the BAM search, Radiance cross-references user-entered names with its proprietary, dynamic risk databases.
Name Extraction. Relationship Mapping.
OS-INT’s proprietary name extraction algorithms identify first, second, and third order relationships of apparently disconnected individuals, entities, and events. It measures network centrality to highlight importance and priority of relationships.
HOW IT WORKS
Input – to Use the Radiance platform:
-
A user enters a name or uploads a batch of names, with or without associated non-sensitive identifying information,
-
chooses to run the search once or at scheduled intervals (for continuous monitoring),
-
chooses specific behavioral patterns for which to screen, and
-
chooses third-party or other accessible datasets for Radiance to integrate alongside open source data.
(Lumina Analytics provides intelligent solutions to help clients manage and mitigate risk. Serving large, regulated industries, law firms and governments globally with risk management intelligence, Lumina mines data from the open-source web to develop risk intelligence for large, regulated industries, and provides clients with unprecedented continuous, actionable prevention and mitigation opportunities. Behind-the-Scenes
Once the analyst initiates a search by a series of algorithms, Radiance:
-
Ingests all documents, regardless of structure or format, associated with these names from the internet and other accessed datasets
-
Scans the documents for phrases that reflect the selected behaviors
-
Rejects documents that do not reflect these behaviors
-
Retains documents that do
-
Prioritizes names associated with the latter for human analysis
Behavioral Affinity Models
At present, the BAMs (terms, phrases, and expressions) Radiance screens for include:
-
Criminal activity
-
Extremist ideology
-
Foreign interest
-
Problematic personal behavior
-
Violent conduct
Output
Upon completion of the search, Radiance produces an automated report of its findings, which:
-
Prioritizes names for human analysis with percentile scores indicative of risk
-
Presents links to and summaries of relevant documents associated with each name
-
Allows the user to edit the report, add notes, or flag documents for further review
-
Allows the user to produce additional reports for single individuals in the population searched
LUMINA’S ALGORITHMS, as used in the Radiance platform include:
-
Lumina’s Snapshot algorithm captures at a given moment the complete digital footprint of an individual or entity on the indexed internet or in other accessed datasets.
-
Lumina’s Data Lake Indexer algorithm applies Lumina’s in-memory indexing method to internal or third-party datasets.
-
Lumina’s BAM Screening algorithm screens documents for phrases indicative of specific behaviors.
-
Lumina’s Score algorithm assigns to each name searched a percentile score representing relative risk.
-
Lumina’s Name Extraction algorithm extracts the names of individuals or entities from documents of many formats.
-
Lumina’s Page Summarizer algorithm generates summaries of documents.
-
Lumina’s Deduplication algorithm removes redundant content from the automated reports produced by Radiance.
-
Lumina’s Delta algorithm triggers the Snapshot algorithm at regular intervals to maintain continuous monitoring of selected individuals or entities.
-
Lumina’s BAM Creator algorithm identifies the list of phrases that most efficiently discriminates between sets of documents and thereby generates BAMs.
-
Lumina’s Edison algorithm is an alternative version of back propagation used in Radiance.
Manual Due Diligence Process vs Lumina’s RADIANCE:
By the Numbers
Lumina estimates that Radiance reduces the time or labor associated with the due diligence processes that it facilitates by approximately 97.5%.
-
One search in Radiance is equivalent to 50,000+ searches per name with a traditional search engine.
-
Each instance of Radiance is a system of 330 servers that operate in coordination.
-
One instance can process approximately 8,000 names per 24 hours.
-
Radiance scales linearly: Ten instances can process approximately 80,000 names per 24 hours, or 8,000 names per 2.4 hours, etc..
Radiance is currently under consideration by a large government agency for use in detecting insider threats and is available to financial institutions for Know Your Customer (KYC) regulatory compliance via the IBM Financial Services Cloud.
RADIANCE ROADMAP
In comparison with manual due diligence processes Lumina’s Radiance saves 97.5% of time and labor costs required to execute searches, process results, prepare reports, prioritize results or reports, and complete further analysis of cases of highest risk.
Lumina anticipates incorporating a new generation of technology into the Radiance UI, algorithms, computational pipeline, and hardware every two years.
“American Security Today supports those at the forefront of protecting communities across the country, and it’s an honor for Lumina to be nominated for an ASTORS Award,” said Chief Executive Officer Michael Browne.
