Apple Security Fix: Urging Immediate iOS Update for iPhones & iPads

Apple products, including iPhones, have been vulnerable since at least last February according to internet security watchdog group Citizen Lab, underscoring the fact that no smartphone can be completely trusted.
Apple products, including iPhones, have been vulnerable since at least last February according to internet security watchdog group Citizen Lab, underscoring the fact that no smartphone can be completely trusted.

Israel-based cyber surveillance company NSO Group has developed a tool to break into Apple iPhones, utilizing a never-before-seen technique that has been in place since last February, according to internet security watchdog group Citizen Lab.

A security vulnerability was found affecting Apple operating systems, which could allow hackers to directly install spyware on iPhones and other Apple devices without any user involvement.

This discovery is crucial because of the critical nature of the vulnerability, which requires no user interaction and affects all versions of Apple’s iOS, OSX, and watchOS, except for those updated on Monday.

iPhone users should update your operating system to iOS 14.8 or iPadOS 14.8 immediately by following Apple’s instructions for iPhones and iPads.

Tips & Best Practices for Smartphone Security

“First, everyone with an iPhone should update their Apple software immediately,” says Chris Risley, CEO at Bastille Networks.

“This vulnerability is a serious one. Apple has stated that it is aware of reports that this vulnerability has been exploited in the wild.”

“The existence of the vulnerability demonstrates that even the Apple iPhone, which places a big emphasis on user privacy, can be subject to exploitation and attack by spyware makers.”

“Modern smartphones are never really off.”

“Ten years ago, you could take the battery out of your phone and be pretty sure it was completely off.”

“However, today batteries are no longer removable. On and off states are determined by software and software is vulnerable.”

Best Practices for Cell Phone Security:

  • Establish and educate upon a corporate policy for all employees to leave cell phones outside of confidential meeting rooms for discussions of mergers, upcoming earnings announcements, new products, or trade secrets etc.

  • Require all visitors and meeting guests to leave their phones outside as well.

  • Don’t rely on the “Honor System” to enforce your policy, install a technology to detect and locate cell phones in all the areas in which confidential conversations occur
