‘ASTORS’ Recognizes Transit COVID-19 Emergency Response Solution

Transit Technology Innovator Luminator Technology Group (Luminator) is the recipient of a 2021 Platinum ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Award from American Security Today for the Renew™ Air Treatment system.

Public transit is an essential link to regional and local economies which was never more apparent than during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in order to return ridership to pre-pandemic levels, public transportation operators need economical and easy-to-use solutions that reduce transmission of airborne viruses.

Transit Technology Innovator Luminator Technology Group (Luminator) is pleased to announce they are the recipient of a 2021 Platinum ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Award from American Security Today for the Renew™ Air Treatment system.

Honored for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Renew Air Treatment system is deployed by mass transportation agencies and dispenses Grignard Pure™, an antimicrobial air treatment, through a connected, technologically advanced system proven to kill 98% of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles in the air, where transmission is most likely.

When the pandemic started, 67 percent of riders reported being extremely or very concerned about the possibility of bringing COVID-19 home, infecting their loved ones.

With one in 10 Americans using public transit on a daily or weekly basis, technology such as continuous air treatment is now safeguarding passengers so they can get to work safely without putting their families or themselves at risk.

Luminator and Grignard Pure partnered to deliver an innovative continuous air treatment system, different than “episodic” treatments and surface disinfecting, for public transit systems.

The solution reduces virus particles in the air – where transmission is most likely.

The Luminator Renew Air Treatment adaptive system utilizes onboard sensors to automatically adjust the system based upon the fresh air intake and other conditions in the vehicle, maintaining proper concentration for efficacy, even with doors opening and closing as passengers embark and disembark the vehicle.

As conditions change, such as fluctuations of fresh air intake throughout the route, the system maintains an effective level to continuously kill virus particles in the air.

The EPA, the U.S. governing body tasked with environmental protection matters, has approved its use of Grignard Pure under a Section 18 Emergency Exemption in several states already, and transit agencies worldwide should see it as a transformative shift in how the mass transit agencies can respond and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luminator’s Renew™ Air Treatment System sets the scene for what’s to be expected across industries far and wide as we embark on finding our “new normal.”

Surface cleanings only disinfect surfaces, not the air, where most COVID-19 virus particles are transmitted.

Furthermore, a surface can be reinfected immediately after being disinfected, a problem that poses safety challenges.

Transit vehicles need solutions that are effective, provide continuous protection, and reflect best practices using the latest scientific information on the virus.

Alternative solutions like UV lights have proven to be less effective than previously hoped.

Tests conducted by MTA indicate that UV lamps only disinfect within their cone of light, which means that dozens or even hundreds of lamps must be deployed at once to treat every inch of a vehicle.

Transit Technology Innovator Luminator Technology Group (Luminator) is the recipient of a 2021 Platinum ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Award from American Security Today for the Renew™ Air Treatment system.
Surface cleanings only disinfect surfaces, not the air, where most COVID-19 virus particles are transmitted, and a surface can be reinfected immediately after being disinfected, a problem that poses safety challenges.

Adequate ventilation and filtration via HVAC systems using specialized filters can reduce the likelihood of airborne exposure but have not been shown to inactivate the virus.

Further, they provide little protection for riders in close proximity to an infected individual, because the virus particles they emit could infect other riders before reaching the filter.

Lastly, foggers or sprays of cleaning products are not generally recommended, as many solutions require manual operation and may be hazardous. According to AIHA, fogging is not the preferred method of application, as it can create many human health hazards.

Long after the days of COVID-19, this solution has the potential to continue to protect riders and operators from other viruses.

If there’s one thing we learned in the last year, it’s that our technology should not only meet the needs of today, but the possibilities of tomorrow too.
