Crossmatch-Team an IARPA ‘Nail to Nail Fingerprint Challenge’ Finalist

Crossmatch, a leader in biometric identity management and secure authentication solutions, is part of a multi-national team selected as a finalist in the Nail-to-Nail Fingerprint Challenge sponsored by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA).

IARPA is an organization within the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence that invests in high-risk, high-payoff research programs addressing the unique technological challenges faced by the Intelligence Community.

Crossmatch teamed up with the French firm ISORG and the UK-based FlexEnable to develop a proof-of-concept automated capture technology that eliminates human operators from physically interacting with the subject and rolling the fingerprints, which is the current method employed by trained law enforcement personnel.

The current capture approach is susceptible to poor technique or training and can result in decreased print quality affecting the ability to identify live or latent fingerprints.

The technology the team is developing will minimize, and potentially remove, the skilled operator from the equation.

The expected result is that the incorporation of rolled fingerprints in future biometric security solutions will be more feasible—and in the case of law enforcement and rolling of criminal fingerprints, will make the process safer.

We are excited to have been selected as a finalist in the IARPA challenge,” noted Crossmatch VP of Optical Technologies Dr. Dan Raguin.
“We feel that our research activities in this challenge showcase Crossmatch’s ability to identify promising technologies and partners for the advancement of biometric technology and solutions that may benefit our customers in the future.”

The Crossmatch team will present a prototype device in Washington, DC during the week of September 18. Winners will be announced sometime in Fall 2017.
