Databuoy Corporation is pleased to announce their “Shotpoint” highly-accurate gunshot detection and localization sensor network system has been nominated to compete in the 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program.
The technology was first developed under research sponsored by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), whose experts worked over a decade in DARPA gunfire localization research programs prior to commercialization in 2014.
Shotpoint has been exhaustively tested throughout its 15-year history and is installed and protecting our most vulnerable citizens here in the United States.
Shotpoint is applicable for both indoor and outdoor environments.
Indoor sensors may be mounted on walls, ceilings, or stairwells. Outdoor sensors may be mounted on buildings, poles, or integrated into outdoor lighting.
(As gun violence continues with 2021 on pace to be the worst year in decades, Databuoy offers the Shotpoint® gunshot localization technology and Geofob™ mobile panic button to provide affordable, reliable, and field-proven technology with the highest performance standards in the industry.. Shotpoint sensors continuously listen for gunshots.
With a patented sensor mesh approach, Shotpoint sensors do more than just reliably detect shots, they fuse data from multiple sensors to localize on the source of gunfire in 3D.
Shotpoint works for all types of small arms, from handguns to rifles. Shotpoint’s patented fusion technique successfully eliminates all false alarms and does not report echoes as shots.
With Shotpoint, only the correct number of gunshots will be reported.
Shotpoint’s outdoor system has the additional capability to locate a sniper shooting a rifle from a distance away from the network.
The exact 3D coordinates of the source of rifle fire are located by sensing the bullet as it passes near the Shotpoint network.
This capability protects against snipers shooting from up to a mile away, or from a high-rise building such as the October 1, 2017, Harvest 91 massacre in Las Vegas, NV.
Key Points of the Databuoy Shotpoint System Include:
-
Shotpoint can detect and confirm gunshots in <2 seconds and can deliver an image/video /audio of the active shooter event to first responders in as little as 4 seconds.
-
Shotpoint integrates with a wide range of cameras and video systems.
-
Shotpoint is the only system capable of delivering a photo of the shooter and the exact moment of the shot.
-
They can deliver images from 3 seconds before and after the shot and stitch that together to give first responders a video clip of the shooter.
-
-
Shotpoint separation is 50m (165ft) and enables them to cover a large area with fewer sensors.
-
Shotpoint can cover large open areas, like a football field with only 6 sensors, and can locate the shooter within 1m CEP.
-
This also means high ceilings are not an issue.
-
-
Shotpoint integrates with mass notifications systems, they also have a web application that can be used remotely for anyone implementing their system.
-
They also provide mobile notifications that include multimedia information on the phone.
-
They can see images, listen to audio, and watch a video of the shooter in action.
-
-
6. Shotpoint is low power and works great over POE.
-
This means Shotpoint can easily be installed where existing cameras are deployed, and you can simply loop the camera back in via the onboard ethernet port built into their sensors.

The company’s recent Shotpoint sensor network installation at the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas detected several gunshots on Aug 4, 2021, around 3:40 am, outside of 4 Queens Casino near the Patio Bar, within seconds security was notified and delivered an image/video/audio of the shooting.
Security responded to the location and located the victim who was transported to the hospital where he later died.
The suspect ran from the scene and was later arrested and charged, and video from the shooting was turned over to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Building on the robust effectiveness and accuracy of our Shotpoint® gunshot localization technology, Databuoy released the Geofob™ mobile panic button in 2021 which utilizes the Shotpoint sensor mesh and integrated software, to expand the security capabilities of their sensor networks.
At the press of a button, the location of the user is delivered to security personnel along with associated video and audio. Never before have panic buttons been enabled with this level of precision enhanced intelligence.
Shotpoint is designed for schools, office buildings, hospitals, retail centers, stadiums, arenas, campuses, and more.
As gun violence continues with 2021 on pace to be the worst year in decades, Databuoy builds affordable, reliable, and field-proven technology with the highest performance standards in the industry.
Founded in 2006, Databuoy® is named after for the company’s early work with the U.S. Navy, and the nautical term, Data Buoys, refers to a network of sensors moored in the ocean which support passing ships.
Databuoy’s sensor networks are land-based, but are similarly “moored” to reliably persist, detect, and serve passers-by.
Their technology is founded on a series of research and development programs sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), for the Army and Navy.
In 2013, Databuoy turned its focus to public safety and their first indoor live-fire test at a school was conducted in 2014, followed by indoor and outdoor range testing and system refinement continued over the years.
The system has been used in real-world environments for several years, providing responders with valuable information to quickly direct them to life-safety incidents and support subsequent investigations.
An expansive acoustic library has been collected on our unique sensor hardware with tens of thousands of rounds fired and millions of hours of sensor operations.
Databuoy continues to actively develop cutting-edge technology products, to add bold new functionality to our cohesive security suite.
