DetectaChem, a Returning Competitor to the 2020 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, is pleased to announce the company’s MobileDetect Bio (MD-Bio) BCC19 COVID-19 tests are being successfully deployed by prestigious colleges and universities in the U.S. to help support a safe return to campus for students and staff.

Earlier this year as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic gripped the United States, DetectaChem, a global leader in innovative portable threat detection technologies used daily by U.S. Homeland Security, Department of Defense and first responder agencies around the world, pivoted to develop smartphone-based, rapid, affordable and highly accurate COVID-19 tests for use in keeping America safe.

Because of the company’s experience in developing field tests for other dangerous substances, DetectaChem’s BCC19 test kit is FDA (Food and Drug Administration) EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) authorized and achieved 100% accuracy during their FDA testing with comparable results to RT-PCR laboratory equipment, and is being utilized across the nation.

DetectaChem’s BCC19 test kit utilizes portable laboratory-grade diagnostic technology and can run up to 96 tests at once in just 30 minutes.

The test detects nucleic acids from the 2019-nCoV virus to determine positive or negative results and then utilizes the free MobileDetect App for Apple and Android platforms to generate result reports with time, date, images, patient info, GPS mapping and more.

Generated test reports can then be immediately sent via email or text to healthcare providers, laboratories or any other desired recipient.

As the school year begins many universities and colleges have already ramped up their testing capabilities but still face the daunting task of implementing effective testing procedures and protocols to keep their students safe.

The University of New Hampshire (UNH), with over 16,000 students, initially used the MD-Bio BCC19 test kits to supplement their CLIA laboratory PCR testing. Positive BCC19 tests are then confirmed with an RT-PCR test.

“UNH used DetectaChem’s solution to provide a fast, molecular test with rapid turnaround time,” explains Marc Sedam, Vice Provost for Innovation and New Ventures at UNH.

“It helped us solve a bottleneck during move-in for students that had not yet received their required lab diagnostic results in time.

“We could give those students same-day results and continue with their move-in process.”

The DetectaChem MD-Bio BCC19 test kits have also been successfully deployed at numerous other colleges, universities and schools around the country for similar purposes as UNH and for continued rapid testing throughout the school year.

“Rapid, accurate, easy-to-use, and widely accessible testing is crucial in enabling a safe return to a more normal life on-campus for colleges and we’re proud to provide the MD-Bio BCC19 kit as a solution,” added DetectaChem COO, Travis Kisner.

“Testing for COVID-19 is a critical part of bringing the pandemic under control and safely reopening the economy in the US and worldwide.”

“DetectaChem decided early-on to develop a COVID-19 test, knowing the unprecedented demand for it and our expertise in serving first responders, military and law enforcement customers around the world who count on precision, accuracy, reliability and accessibility of our tests in large quantities.”

Leveraging DetectaChem’s experience in fully-integrated mobile solutions, the BCC19 test kit is also offered in a variety of Mobile Field Lab (MFL) configurations which contain up to 960 tests and all components needed for nasal or oral sampling and analysis in a single ruggedized and lightweight case.

This unique option allows universities, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, police departments, emergency services and many others to deploy high-throughput mass testing solutions anytime, anywhere.

As many testing sites can take 24 hours or much longer to produce test results, asymptomatic positive patients waiting for results can unknowingly infect countless others.

DetectaChem began intense work on a COVID-19 test immediately when the pandemic began in early 2020, as we knew our detection and manufacturing capabilities would provide a significant advantage in delivering and deploying these tests to the market,” explained DetectaChem COO, Travis Kisner.

With the BCC19 test kit’s 30-minute cycle and diagnostic-level results for asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, the window for spreading COVID-19 is drastically reduced from hours or days to minutes resulting in greater safety for organizations and their communities at large.

Additionally, DetectaChem’s next test in development, the MobileDetect Bio (MD-Bio) BCP19 Test has successfully passed multiple development and funding phases and is currently advancing quickly through the final phases of the NIH (National Institutes of Health) RADxSM (Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics) Tech initiative.

The RADxSM initiative was created by the National Institute of Health to rapidly accelerate innovation in the development, commercialization, implementation and mass deployment of technologies for COVID-19 testing across the U.S..

RADxSM is providing clinical, technical, and regulatory support, one-on-one guidance to project teams, and funding for solutions like DetectaChem’s BCP19 Test Pouch that make tests easier to use, access, and scale for mass manufacturing.

Through this initiative, the NIH has rigorously reviewed and selected companies to move their innovative diagnostic technologies swiftly through the development pipeline toward commercialization and broad availability — with the goal of making millions of tests per week available to Americans, particularly those most vulnerable to and/or disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

DetectaChem’s MD-Bio BCP19 Test Pouch is an innovative, high throughput, portable point-of-care test that can produce results for numerous samples simultaneously in about 18 minutes.

The test detects nucleic acids from the SARS-CoV-2 which produces a clear colorimetric reaction to determine positive or negative infection results for active RNA.

The solution combines a unique single-use test where the swabbed sample is inserted directly into the pouch combining with reagents, primers and viral transfer medium and then utilizes a propriety, single-button-operation MD-Bio Thermal Heater.

The BCP19 Pouch and MD-Bio Thermal Heater are designed from the ground up for maximum ease of use for all point-of-care applications.

DetectaChem is also working to develop the first molecular home use coronavirus test evolving from the current BCP19 test in final development with the RADxSM program.

As with the MD-Bio BCC-19 test, the MD-Bio BCP-19 test the MobileDetect App can be used as an optional tool for automated infection result report generation.
