How NEC is Changing the World with $500K Health and Education Grants

NEC Foundation of America, the charitable giving fund of NEC Corporation of America (NEC), whose subsidiary NEC National Security Systems (NSS) is the Returning Platinum Industry Sponsor for the 2023 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, has dedicated over $500,000 to schools and non-profit programs with 2023 grants.

Since 1991, NEC Foundation of America’s mission has been to create social value and help advance human potential through technology and innovative giving programs.

Comprised of new and long-standing community partners, grantees were selected based on their measurable community impact. Furthermore, they demonstrated dedication to the foundation’s core pillars of education, health and human services, environmental stewardship, and community wellbeing.

Catch Up & Read at the Herbert Marcus Elementary School in Dallas, Texas

  • Catch Up & Read’s mission is to equip children in underserved communities to read on grade level by 3rd grade so they can graduate from high school and break the generational cycle of poverty.

  • Catch Up & Read is the only North Texas reading intervention program that closes the literacy gap by leveraging data, technology, and educators to scale proven practices in both English and Spanish.

  • Catch Up & Read is data-driven and results-oriented, and consistently out-perform national trends for intervention targeting low-performing students.

  • Catch Up & Read’s dedicated team of educators, literacy experts, and volunteers are champions for the schools we serve. Our close partnership contributes to campus-wide literacy improvements.

The Book vending machine and student home library program by the Dallas Education Foundation in Dallas, Texas

  • The Book vending machine and student home library program invest in childhood education and literacy programs by providing books to elementary students and encouraging a love of reading.

  • Rather than a typical snack or drink dispenser, the book vending machine sparks a different excitement for teachers and students alike, advancing literacy from a young age.

  • To activate the machine, teachers hand out tokens to their students as a reward.

The Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum by the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas), in Dallas, Texas

  • As a home for world-renowned art collections and a much-needed performance space on campus, the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum will be a new 12-acre cultural and visual arts complex at UT Dallas, that will create a bridge between UT Dallas and external communities, a place to welcome schoolchildren, families, and visitors from around the world.

(The construction team and UT Dallas officials celebrated an important milestone for the first phase of the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum when they signed what would become the building’s top roof beam just before it was raised into position. This facility begins a complex intended to mount live events, provide more space to study and display the University’s growing art collection, and promises to become a magnet for culture in North Texas. Young Women’s Preparatory Network at the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School in Dallas, Texas

NEC Foundation has long supported many of this year’s recipients, providing funding, donations, internships, and volunteer support.

Some examples include working with Herbert Marcus Elementary School’s Catch Up & Read program to give students the reading foundation they need to succeed in school and life, cofounding the STEAM FC educational field trip program alongside the FC Dallas Foundation, as well as providing funding, internships, and upgraded technology for the Young Women’s Preparatory Network and Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School.
