NEC National Security Systems (NEC NSS), a leading provider of biometric identity and artificial intelligence (AI) technology for federal government agencies in defense, intelligence, law enforcement, and homeland security, is pleased to announce it has received Three Nominations for the companies innovative and extraordinary product offerings in the 2023 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program.

NEC NSS, a Multiple Homeland Security Award Winner in the 2022 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Program, has been recognized for the last Five Consecutive Years in the Annual ‘ASTORS’  Homeland Security Awards Programs, respectively.

NEC NSS deploys groundbreaking solutions for government use, including end-to-end systems for access control and security, Next Gen identity verification, scene processing, advanced analytics, and intrusion detection.

NEC NSS Intelligent Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (IPIDS)

The NEC NSS Intelligent Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (IPIDS) combines NEC’s global expertise in transoceanic fiber cable with advances in machine learning-based artificial intelligence to create a cutting-edge perimeter security system.

IPIDS can detect physical intrusions and disturbances above ground, underground, and underwater. The optical fibers are connected to a centrally located interrogator, which sends and receives light to the optical fiber.

(Learn how NEC NSS’ IPIDS uses state-of-the-art #opticalfibersensing, #videoanalytics, #machinevision, #computervision, #AI, #machinelearning, #deeplearning, and #sensorfusion to achieve real-time and ubiquitous situational awareness of physical #security threats and #anomalies. IPIDS covertly, quickly, reliably, and accurately detects, locates, prompts automated video verification, and triggers escalated security response. Featuring industry-disruptive probability of detection, nuisance alarm rate, and total cost of ownership, IPIDS can be used in the US Federal government’s programs such as Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection, Integrated Base Defense, Electronic Security, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Protective Distribution, and Linear Ground Detection. Courtesy of NEC America and YouTube.)

Physical intrusions like fence climbing or digging create vibrations, which the interrogator interprets as changes in light. Then, the machine learning-based AI classifies and locates the physical intrusion and sends an alert to our customizable graphical user interface.

The machine learning-based AI can differentiate between anomalies like digging, fencing climbing, fence cutting, human walking or running, vehicles moving, and low-flying aircraft.

It can also pinpoint where the anomaly occurs within 1 m (3 ft). The tuning of these alerts creates a highly accurate alerting system with a low nuisance alarm rate.

In addition to accuracy, NSS IPIDS offers a reliable perimeter security system with a low cost of ownership.

IPIDS performance is invariant to seasons and remains consistent in various field conditions, including strong wind, heavy rain and snow, dense fog, and lighting and explosive atmospheres.

This durability provides a significant reduction in maintenance costs.

Additionally, IPIDS is immune to electromagnetic interference and requires no electrical power in the field, making it ideal for monitoring both near and remote areas.

One interrogator can detect anomalies along up to 160 km (100 mi) of optical fiber, contributing to low equipment and installation costs.

Overall, NEC’s Intelligent Perimeter Intrusion Detection System provides the best accuracy, the highest probability of detection, and the lowest nuisance alarm rate over the longest distances of any perimeter security solution to date.

NEC Face/Iris Capture

This system combines NEC’s number-one-ranked face recognition technology with its number-one-ranked iris recognition technology to create a highly accurate (false acceptance rate of 1 in 10 billion) identity verification system.

(NEC has been awarded as the market leader again in the Frost Radar: Biometric Authentication Solutions 2022 by Frost and Sullivan. In addition to high accuracy, the NEC Face/Iris Capture system quickly authenticates registered users by simply standing in front of the terminal.

Even under conditions where individuals may be wearing masks, goggles, or gloves, the NEC Face/Iris Capture is capable of maintaining its high accuracy, ensuring convenience to the user without compromising security.

The NEC Face/Iris Capture system can be integrated into various access control and payment systems as an added layer of security without disturbing existing workflows.

Main features of the new NEC Face/Iris Capture solution include the following:

1. Highly accurate certification with a false acceptance rate of one in 10 billion

  • By combining the world’s No.1 face recognition technology with the world’s No.1 iris recognition technology, NEC has achieved a high authentication accuracy with a false acceptance rate of one in 10 billion.

  • In addition to strict access control in critical facilities and high-security areas where passwords are required, it can be applied to a wide range of usage scenes where it is difficult to introduce biometric authentication alone, such as payments used by large numbers of people.

2. Fast and convenient multimodal biometric authentication

  • Acquiring both face information and iris information at the same time enables speedy multimodal biometric authentication.

  • To accurately capture iris information, which has been difficult to acquire in the past, the camera automatically changes positions according to the user’s height, and the iris position can be identified accurately and quickly by using face detection.

  • As a result, users can be quickly authenticated just by standing in front of a terminal.

  • The solution is also capable of contactless authentication when individuals wear masks, goggles, sunglasses, hats, and gloves or when both hands are occupied by luggage.

3. Smooth deployment and reduced operational workload

The NEC Face/Iris Capture solution can be implemented smoothly because it does not require complicated design, such as parameter settings and optimization verification of the imaging environment unique to biometric authentication.

Also, because it supports REST API, it can easily link with various systems, such as access control, reducing the installation cost and time required.

In addition, this solution can reduce the workload of system administrators by introducing it in cases where multiple authentication methods are required, such as cards and PIN codes. This solution’s biometric authentication enables a shared ID to accelerate seamless collaboration among numerous services and contributes to creating new customer experiences and services.

Potential applications of the NEC Face/Iris Capture solution include identity verification at large-scale sporting events, immigration services, etc.

Also, high-security access control facilities such as research laboratories, areas dealing with sensitive matters, important government facilities, data centers, etc.

Additionally, access control facilities that require the use of masks, hats, and gloves, such as food factories with dress restrictions, clean rooms in factories, medical sites, etc.

NEC Face/Iris Capture would also be ideal for quick, hands-free store payments and identity verification for ATM transactions.

NEC Gateless Entry

NEC’s Gateless Entry solution combines the global No. 1 face algorithm with proprietary person re-identification technology to allow fast and reliable entry control ‘at speed’ for groups of people.

NEC’s Gateless Entry technology provides for accurate matching, even if people are facing away from the camera or their bodies are occluded.

(Learn how a Digital ID-based (DID-based) Visitor Management solution improves the visitor experience by reducing wait times and streamlining check-in. Visitors can use existing digital identity credentials (e.g., mobile phone or government-issued ID) for quick registration and facility access. Real-time updates on visitor location and status can enhance communication and coordination. Austin Park, the Director of Technical Solutions and Software Development for NEC NSS, explains how this cost-effective and scalable solution automates registration, provides easy access to visitor data, and generates reports and analytics, reducing staff workload and improving efficiency. It is a game-changer for enhancing security, streamlining management, and improving the overall visitor experience for government agencies and organizations. Courtesy of NEC America and YouTube.)

NEC’s Gateless Entry innovation allows for the removal of traditional or guarded security gates, reducing bottlenecks and wait times without affecting the security of a site or event.

NEC’s Gateless Entry allows many people to be authenticated simultaneously, smoothly, without stopping. If a person whose face image has not been registered in advance enters the area, an alert can be displayed above their head or on a security monitor nearby.
