Firefighters paid a high price for this fire record as well; in 2019, 62 firefighters died on duty.
America’s fire losses today represent a dramatic improvement from more than 40 years ago. In 1971, our nation lost more than 12,000 residents and 250 firefighters to fire.
Acting to stop these tragic losses, Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act in 1974, and created the National Fire Prevention and Control Administration (NFPCA), now the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), and the National Fire Academy (NFA).
Since that time, through data collection, public education, research and training efforts, USFA has helped to reduce fire deaths and make our communities and residents safer.
While the loss of our possessions in a fire can be upsetting, the physical injuries and psychological impacts that fires can inflict on our lives are often far more devastating.
The great majority of civilian fire injuries that occur each year result from home fires.
A new report from the U.S. Fire Administration describes the characteristics of civilian fire injuries in residential buildings reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System for 2017‑2019.

Civilian Fire Injuries in Residential Buildings Key Findings Include:

Annually, from 2017 to 2019, an estimated 11,650 civilian fire injuries resulted from 7,200 residential building fires resulting in injuries.

From 2017 to 2019, civilian fire injuries in residential buildings accounted for 75% of all estimated fire injuries.

On average, someone is injured in a residential building fire every 45 minutes.

The peak period from 5 to 8 p.m. accounted for 17% of the residential fires resulting in injuries.

January (10%) and March (10%) had the highest incidence of residential building fires resulting in injuries.

Cooking (31%) was the leading cause of residential building fires that resulted in injuries.

Of the civilian fire injuries that occurred in residential buildings, 33% resulted from trying to control a fire; an additional 29% occurred while the victim was attempting to escape.

Smoke inhalation and thermal burns were the primary symptoms resulting in injury, accounting for 79% of all injuries resulting from residential building fires.

Understand your fire risk

Having physical or mental disabilities doesn’t mean you can’t keep you and your family safe from fire.

Build your home safety plan around your abilities.
Install and maintain smoke alarms

Smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or flashing light are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Smoke alarms with a strobe light outside the home to catch the attention of neighbors, and emergency call systems for summoning help, are also available.

Ask the manager of your building, or a friend or relative, to install at least 1 smoke alarm on each level of your home.

Test smoke alarm batteries every month and change them at least once a year. If you can’t reach the test button on your smoke alarm, ask someone to test it for you.
Live near an exit

Although you have the legal right to live where you choose, you’ll be safest on the ground floor if you live in an apartment building.

If you live in a multistory home, arrange to sleep on the first floor.

Being on the ground floor and near an exit will make your escape easier.
Plan your escape

Plan your escape around your capabilities.

Know at least 2 exits from every room.

If you use a walker or wheelchair, check all exits to be sure you can get through the doorways.

Make any necessary changes, such as installing exit ramps and widening doorways, to make an emergency escape easier.
Don’t isolate yourself

Speak to your family members, building manager or neighbors about your fire safety plan and practice it with them.

Contact your local fire department’s nonemergency line and explain your needs. They can suggest escape plan ideas and may perform a home fire safety inspection if you ask.

Ask emergency providers to keep your needs information on file.

Keep a phone near your bed and be ready to call 911 or your local emergency number if a fire occurs.

Rescue helicopter hoist operators need gloves to protect the hand that guides the hoist cable during rescue descents and ascents, using a significant amount of force to mitigate the cable swinging for situations from hurricane evacuations and dive rescues to rescuing stranded hikers on a mountain side, missions vary and no two are ever alike.

The Slash CameraPole is a self-triggering platform with wireless data retrieval to detect and give warning of suspicious activities at the U.S.-Canada border, specifically a cleared stretch of land at the border that is approximately 20-feet wide, 1,349 miles long, and is referred to as the “Slash.”

This man-made, treeless zone is mandated by the International Boundary Commission and presents a formidable surveillance challenge, against such threats as illegal crossings, drug and illegal contraband smuggling and human trafficking.

Using the Slash CameraPole system, Border Patrol has been able to establish an advanced border surveillance capability where none existed before.

Partnering with MIT Lincoln Laboratory and several private companies to create the Slash CameraPole with numerous ingenious features, such as solar panels and a back-up fuel cell system make it independent of the power grid, multiple infrared cameras (two long-range, one foreground, and one base imager with a fisheye lens) mean it doesn’t miss a thing.

The Slash CameraPole also employs advanced motion detection algorithms and automated alerts designed to improve classification of targets and lower the chance of false alarms from factors such as wild animals or vegetation moving in the wind.

DHS’s Federal Protective Service (FPS) provides integrated security and law enforcement services–including conducting security assessments and detecting and mitigating threats–to over 9,500 federal facilities. To accomplish this mission, FPS leverages the Modified Infrastructure Survey Tool (MIST), a joint solution developed in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory.

Argonne and FPS have continuously sought ways to improve the tool’s ability to assess, detect, and mitigating threats, and this year, no threat was more pervasive in this country than COVID-19.
