Amidst today’s challenging times, de-escalation training for law enforcement is essential to serving our communities.

Lt. Joseph Pangaro, a 27-year veteran police officer, former director of school safety and security, and a 2020 ‘ASTORS’ Platinum Award Winner for ‘Excellence in Public Safety,’ is the president of True Security Design.

Lt. Pangaro is an FBI trained Hostage/Crisis negotiator with many years of experience, as well as a certified police trainer who teaches in many police academies, and now in result of the COVID-19 pandemic, has developed remote training to police departments across the USA via the internet.

Crisis De-Escalation training is a crucial skill for anyone in law enforcement as well as for anyone who works in places where people gather like schools, businesses, religious facilities, and camps.

Lt. Pangaro created several programs around the concepts of Crisis De-Escalation for each of the groups he addresses.

He offers a 2-day, role player program for law enforcement and security officers and a 4-hour block of training for school personnel called “Crisis in the Classroom” and one for businesses, religious facilities and camps called “Crisis in the workplace”.

All of the programs are in depth and focus the attendees on understanding:

  • The nature of a crisis

  • The mindset of a person in crisis

  • How to distinguish a crisis from a bad day

  • How to react to a person in crisis

  • How to speak to a person in crisis

  • Understanding the suicidal components of a person in crisis

  • How to use the skills of active listening, empathy, emotional labeling, and the echo technique to de-escalate a person in crisis

  • How to bring a crisis to an end safely

These concepts are taught using real life experiences and exercises as a guide to understand the concepts of de-escalation so the attending personnel can adopt them into their own lives, practice them, and have them available should they ever need to de-escalate a situation.

The law enforcement version of the training uses role playing actors as people in crisis that the officers have to interact with under very realistic and stressful conditions.

This technique not only challenges the officers, but it also helps them to see they can respond properly to a person in crisis and resolve the situation safely.

In addition to responding to a potentially violent person in crisis, the training also prepares the officers to de-escalate other non-life-threatening situations that they come across every day when interacting with the public.

These skills have a place for every officer.

Crisis De-Escalation training is available from Lt. Pangaro and True Security Design via live in-person classes, online remote programs or on video.
