Guest Editorial by McKay Lundgren, President of Siren Operated Sensors
“In an emergency, first responders lose precious time entering gated communities,” explains Brookhaven, GA Police Chief Gary Yandura.
“Each development has a different protocol for access, and unmanned entrances become a real hindrance to immediate response.”
“In an emergency, a few extra minutes can be the difference between life and death.”
When Police, Fire & Rescue, and EMS units are responding to an emergency every second counts, whether it be a gate, parking arm, automatic barrier, or roll-up door protecting a residential or commercial property, a parking garage, airport, government, or military facility.
As a nation, we have put up more and more fences and gates to protect ourselves and our properties.
These barriers have presented obstacles to our emergency responders and increased the time it takes for them to respond.
(With SOS there is no excuse for precious lives to be lost because emergency responders could not access victims due to antiquated gate systems. Learn More. Courtesy of KSAT 12 and YouTube.)
To reduce response time Siren Operated Sensor (SOS) has been committed for the last 40 years to getting emergency responders through gates faster.
The original SOS gate trigger identifies the “Yelp” tone of an emergency vehicle and opens the gate. In the past keys or codes were the only way to open a gate.
After the Siren Operated Sensor came onto the market other fast systems like Click2Enter, Opticom, A&E Reno, and Tomar joined in.
As a group, these new systems provided a faster response in an emergency with no need to stop and get out of the vehicle and enter a key or a code.
The SOS Silent introduced secure RFID (radio frequency identification) to open the gate, allowing faster access to emergency vehicles able to open gates up to 500 feet away.
Now the gate can be fully open before the vehicle gets to the gate and there is no need to even slow down while going through the gate. Another leap forward in reducing response time saving lives and protecting property.
Terry Nall, of the Dunwoody Georgia City Council, explains “l ride with police officers annually to understand our community better from the eyes of the officers. We have a lot of gated communities and every time we get to a gate the officer pulls up the gate code on their computer.”
“For various reasons, some of the codes in the police computer systems are no longer active; this leads to significant delays. I championed the push to find a better way to access gated communities for our emergency responders.”
“The SOS Silent was exactly what we were looking for. Soon after the SOS Silent was installed, I rode along with the first responders to see it in action. It felt like we were the cavalry arriving!”
“The gates were opening before we got to them, and we never had to come to a stop to wait on the gate. With the SOS Silent, formerly helpless emergency responders can now ride to save the day!”
“As more and more Americans choose to live in gated communities, it’s increasingly important to support emergency responders with the tools they need to save lives. Gate codes and keys are completely outdated, but, like your grandpa’s green suede shoes, they’re comfortable… until a crisis.”
Since 1992, the original Siren Operated Sensor (SOS) has been used to open residential, commercial, airport, government, and military gates during an emergency, and is currently used throughout North America, South America, and Europe.
If you need your gates, doors, parking arms, barriers, or roll-up doors to open for emergency responders, then you need an SOS installed on each of these devices today!
Once the “Yelp” siren has been recognized for 3 seconds, a trigger is sent to open the gate.
The SOS is the most cost-effective way for emergency responders to access your home or business without stopping or leaving their vehicle to enter a code or to use a key.
The reliability of the SOS Emergency Access System has made it mandatory in many communities throughout the world. Making your gate siren activated saves time and is a big step to saving lives and property.

-
This pure and simple system allows responders to focus on driving and on the emergency ahead without pushing a remote, looking up a code, stopping to use a key, or changing the channel on their radio to trigger the gate.
-
Using RFID the SOS Silent System will open gates quickly, silently, and automatically when emergency response vehicles come within range of the gate and can be adjusted from 10 to 600 feet to customize each gate entrance.
-
The SOS Silent also has a backup entry system to open with the “YELP” siren.
-
SOS Silent ensures first responders can get to community members in need with no life-threatening delays. No stopping, no getting out of the vehicle, no codes to remember, no remotes to push, no keys to lose, and no cost to the municipalities.
