With more and more so-called soft targets being attacked around the world, heightened security is needed virtually everywhere.
With the ongoing threat of global terrorism or instances of mass shootings or other mass casualty events, weapons-based threats remain a constant risk for security systems and public safety around the world.
And as with its penetration of many other industry verticals, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being leveraged in a variety of ways to keep those threats in check.
Eight time record breaking 2018 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards winner, SWORD™, is the world’s first mobile IoT threat detection device built on top of the Apple iPad Air.

Housed in its own case, SWORD™ is able to use a combination of proprietary AI, mmWave and sensor fusion technology to detect concealed weapons, and explosive devices; run one of the fastest facial recognition scans in the industry against proprietary cloud-based databases; and locate gunfire with best-in-class triangulation — all in a matter of seconds.
The SWORD system works by beaming millimeter waves at individuals, which bounce off any guns concealed beneath their clothing or stashed in backpacks or other luggage.
The system processes the millimeter waves that bounce back from an individual with AI software trained to recognize what the concealed item is.
SWORD™ is not meant as a silver bullet but rather as a new, powerful tool to be used in the battle against terrorism, mass shooters and other instruments of chaos and mass casualty.
With the development of SWORD™, new partnerships have evolved that allows further market penetration of the SWORD product as well as lucrative licensing opportunities.
SWORD™ has recently rolled out their new product suite which now includes a ground-breaking national security solution for government agencies with SWORD Sleuth as well as an even more mobile unit by integrating SWORD’s proprietary technology with T3 Motion’s Electric Standup Vehicles with SWORD Move.
“With these new partnerships we are advancing the increasingly important ability to provide security where it has never been available before,” said Barry Oberholzer, CEO of SWORD.
The new product suite announcement was followed on the heels of the partnership with the Vuzix Corporation to integrate AR glasses with all SWORD units being shipped.
“All of the information is displayed on the Vuzix smart glasses to create a highly mobile and adaptable perimeter solution.”
“Vuzix Blade provides a see-through display that not only allows our customers to stay connected with the real world, but also be connected to the digital world to receive critical alerts related to safety threats from our SWORD solution,” said Oberholzer.
SWORD Sleuth Powered by Yobe is a unique surveillance product for government agencies tasked with national security.
Yobe is solving an entrenched problem identifying a particular voice in noise.
That means for instance if you are at a party and you want Alexa to play a Spotify playlist, you could (in theory at least), say the wake word from across a crowded room, give the playlist command and the device would execute it in spite of the noise.
That’s because Yobe can pinpoint a voice based on biometric markers, aggressively enhance the volume and then use AI to smooth it out.
Most of these voice interface technologies fail in this situation because they can’t distinguish your voice from the background noise, but Yobe solves this.
Combining Yobe with SWORD features makes for a unique surveillance product which allows for far and near field voice isolation as well as real time transcription and translation powered by IBM Watson.
Security operations span from corporate and industrial facilities to high-traffic retail and entertainment venues.
(Secure A School – By using SWORD, the world’s most intelligent detection and recognition platform, school campuses can instantly detect and deter known threats to students and faculty. Mobilize security with real-time alerts and actionable intelligence. Courtesy of SWORD and YouTube.)
These operations demand vehicles that are comfortable and easy to operate as well as agile and quick in responding to emergencies.
SWORD Move is a unique electric standup vehicle (ESV), designed with the world leader in the industry – T3 Motion.
SWORD Move integrates the SWORD Enterprise unit on a custom operating console to allow the operator to use all SWORD functionalities from their vehicle to identify immediate threats.
With the success of SWORD miniaturizing mmWave technology it further allowed for the deployment of their proprietary hardware stack to be deployed onto an electric standup vehicle.
T3 Motion currently has more than 10 000 units deployed. Internationally including 350 law enforcement agencies and 70 airports.
With the ever-changing threat landscape, SWORD Move can now be deployed by security firms and law enforcement agencies to immediately detect known and concealed threats that offers a high level of visibility for the driver along with the agility to respond quickly to immediate threats.
In 2018, SWORD took home three Platinum, three Gold, one Silver and a coveted ‘ASTORS’ Extraordinary Leadership Award, in recognition for their innovation in joining mobile platforms with IoT and artificial intelligence – into a single, covert, handheld device capable of identifying immediate threats, for mitigation and rapid response.
