Teledyne FLIR, the New Multi-Platinum ‘ASTORS’ Award Winner in the AST 2021 Homeland Security Awards Program for Best Chemical/Biological/Radiation/ Nuclear/Explosive (CBRNE) Detection Solution, has won a development contract worth up to $15.7 million with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Joint Science and Technology Office (DTRA JSTO) to develop novel battlefield threat mapping and visualization tools.
This new technology will allow the capability to digitally map hazardous material threats from sensor data in order to ‘see’ their exact location via mixed reality on mobile phones, tablets, and Heads-Up Displays (HUDs).
Teledyne FLIR will work with partners to develop software that allows Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) hazards to be precisely located, measured, and mapped for viewing within the Tactical Assault Kit (TAK) suite of tools.
The threat map will be visualized in a ‘see-through’ augmented reality (AR) display by those running TAK on their electronics, as well as by futuristic HUD devices like the Integrated Visualization Augmentation System (IVAS), which is a United States Army program to provide infantry with a mixed reality headset.
These mixed reality headsets will provide a wide variety of capabilities to soldiers including, but not limited to, digital wide-angle multi-spectral image fusion of solid-state low-light, thermal, and daylight sensing, object outlining emphasis, 3D map, and waypoint overlays, a picture-in-picture display of weapons sights, and a Squad Immersive Virtual Trainer that allows them to train against virtual enemies overlaid upon their real-world field of vision.
Funded out of DTRA’s Digital Battlespace Management office, the program’s goal is to provide improved real-time CBRN situational awareness and enable TAK users to see and avoid chemical and biological hazards.
The project also will allow future individuals equipped with IVAS to visualize chem-bio threats and receive real-time decision support when performing reconnaissance and decontamination missions.
Additionally, the program further lays the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AR groundwork for the Army’s autonomous decontamination efforts.
“To protect our troops wherever they deploy, we need to leverage the most advanced detection and battlefield management technologies to counter the lethal risk posed by chemical and biological weapons,” explained Dr. David Cullin, general manager of Teledyne FLIR’s Unmanned and Integrated Solutions business.
“We’re proud to lead this effort that will help our warfighters intuitively visualize dangerous chem-bio threats, while also advancing future capabilities tied to IVAS and autonomous robotic decontamination.”
The contract will fund the development of a mission-flexible prototype consisting of networked chem-bio sensors and AR visualization tools that DTRA will evaluate over the course of several events.
The award comprises a 12-month base period, three 12-month options, plus other optional tasks. Work will be performed at Teledyne FLIR’s Pittsburgh site.

Best CBRNE Detection Solution
The Teledyne FLIR identiFINDER R700, introduced in June 2021, is a Backpack Radiation Detector (BRD) that fills a need in the operational deployment of radiation detectors.
The R700 builds upon years of tried and true spectroscopic algorithms applied to a man-portable backpack detection system for accurate and reliable results.
The R700’s lightweight, flexible and portable design allows users to configure the system as either an unmarked backpack or a stationary device, enabling mission sets from wide-area searches to temporary checkpoints.
With its nondescript backpack form-factor and phone-based user interface, operators detect radiological threats covertly, even in a crowd.
The identiFINDER R700 which is a recent recipient of a U.S. government award, provides the capabilities required to successfully perform wide-area searches quickly and efficiently while offering exceptional sensitivity, communication, and trusted spectroscopic algorithms in a lightweight, ergonomic form-factor.

*FLIR Systems has now been recognized in all Six Consecutive Years of the Annual ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards.
The Annual ‘ASTORS’ Awards highlights the most cutting-edge and forward-thinking security solutions coming onto the market today, to ensure our readers have the information they need to stay ahead of the competition and keep our Nation safe – one facility, street, and city at a time.
The United States was forever changed 20 years ago on September 11th, and we were fortunate to have many of those who responded to those horrific tragedies join us at the 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Luncheon.
In the days that followed 9/11, the critical needs of protecting our country catapulted us into new and innovative ways to secure our homeland – which is how many of the agencies and enterprise organizations that are today ‘ASTORS’ Awards Champions, came into being.
Our keynote speaker featured a moving and informative address from TSA Administrator and Vice-Admiral of the United States Coast Guard (Ret), David Pekoske; to our attendees who traveled from across the United States and abroad, on the strategic priorities of the 64,000 member TSA workforce in securing the transportation system, enabling safe, and in many cases, contactless travel.
Legendary Police Commissioner William Bratton of the New York Police Department, the Boston Police Department, and former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department was also live at the event, meeting with attendees and signing copies of his latest work ‘The Profession: A Memoir of Community, Race, and the Arc of Policing in America,’ courtesy of the generosity of our 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Premier Sponsors.
The 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Awards Program was Proudly Sponsored by AMAROK, Fortior Solutions and SIMS Software, along with Returning Premier Sponsors ATI Systems, Attivo Networks, Automatic Systems, and Reed Exhibitions.
