Verizon Frontline showcased next-generation emergency response technology for New York City first responders during a demonstration at the city’s Office of Emergency Management, which was Recognized in the 2020 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, on National First Responders Day, Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, in New York.
The event featured Verizon Frontline’s Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response (THOR) vehicle, a first-of-its-kind, rapid response command center, for representatives from multiple New York City public safety agencies to experience the future of emergency response technology – and have an opportunity to actually demo the technology.
(Meet THOR, the Verizon disaster response vehicle in a league of its own. Whether it’s a wildfire, hurricane or other emergency, the Verizon Response Team (VRT) is always ready to rush to a crisis to maintain and restore connectivity for our customers and first responders when they need it most. Even with 5G technology more accessible than ever, in some situations, there is still an opportunity to enhance the network and technological capabilities of those in public safety and the U.S. military.
Whether operating in an austere military environment, fighting wildfires in forests across the western U. S. where network connections and coverage can be challenging, or dealing with the devastation and infrastructure damage caused by hurricanes or tornadoes, public safety professionals and service members face the potential of coverage and technology gaps or an out-of-service network.
Verizon Frontline’s THOR was designed to address these challenges by creating a vehicle that could provide public safety agencies or the Department of Defense with high-quality communications and applications under nearly any conditions.
Offering full radio interoperability and built on a uniquely-modified Ford F650 chassis, with a six-seat cab and three-seat rear command center, THOR can provide its own mobile network and also features capabilities ranging from commercial satellite options to the ability to be operated remotely from a tablet.
Able to integrate with commercial drone applications, THOR also has an onboard tethered drone to assist with disaster response and risk assessment missions.
With capabilities ranging from mobile, private 5G UWB to satellite, to commercial and onboard drone options, to the ability to be operated remotely from a tablet, THOR could be considered the Swiss-Army Knife of Verizon Frontline services.
THOR is National Incident Management System — or NIMS-1 — compliant and offers full radio interoperability and onboard Joint Operations Center services.
It provides a multitude of connectivity options, spanning private 5G, commercial 4G LTE, Land Mobile Radio and tactical radio, wireless networking, microwave, mesh and more.
Other components include 4G/5G radios, a rear command center, a camera, a six-seat cabin, and an exterior touch screen display.
It also comes equipped with a tethered drone to capture an aerial view that can be fed over the network to devices on the ground and the command center below, potentially helping those in public safety or the military with risk and damage assessment, situational awareness, or search and rescue operations.
Some other exciting emergency response technology brought directly to NYC-area first responders to show them what the future of their job may look like, included:
-
A mixed-reality headset that allows first responders to provide life-saving aid by communicating with and receiving information in real-time from medical professionals offsite.
-
Body-worn sensors that monitor first responders’ health and location in dangerous situations.
The Verizon Response Team (VRT) is always ready to rush to a crisis to maintain and restore connectivity for their customers and first responders when they need it most.
Their team has always relied on a menagerie of types of field equipment, referred to as The Barnyard. This includes COWs (Cell On Wheels), COLTs (Cell On Light Trucks), CROWs (Cellular Repeater On Wheels) and GOATs (Generator On A Trailer).
(Thanks to the Verizon Response Team or VRT for providing recovery and relief to their customers, communities and local/state/federal agencies during times of crisis.
