FPS helps agencies reduce Security Compliance concerns with Key Tool

As the police force of DHS the Federal Protective Service is responsible for protecting Federal Facilities, their occupants, and visitors, ensuring a safe environment in which federal agencies can conduct their business. FPS does this by conducting facility security assessments; responding to calls for service for crimes in progress and other incidents to protect life and property; and detecting, investigating, and mitigating threats posed against over 9,000 federal facilities nationwide.

FPS does this by conducting facility security assessments; responding to calls for service for crimes in progress and other incidents to protect life and property; and detecting, investigating, and mitigating threats posed against over 9,000 federal facilities nationwide.

Federal agencies are responsible for demonstrating their compliance with Interagency Security Committee (ISC) standards for each location they occupy.

Since 2013, the Federal Protective Service (FPS) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and a Finalist in the 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program, has assisted these agencies with meeting the standards by performing more than 16,000 facility security assessments (FSAs) through which it has made more than 35,000 security-related recommendations.

As part of FPS’s mission, the agency leverages a series of ISC-established standards to help ensure that personnel, visitors, and property are protected from external and internal threats at Federal facilities.

The training involved to face these crimes, incidents, and threats is rigorous and appeals to the brave, who took the oath to protect, prevent and respond. While agency-level reporting requirements improve security across government facilities, fulfilling them creates a time-consuming burden for both FPS and each agency.

To help alleviate this burden, FPS uses the Modified Infrastructure Survey Tool (MIST) which was developed in partnership with the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, also a Finalist in the 2021 ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Awards Program.

If you are one of the 1.4 million people that visit any of the 9,000 federal facilities each day, the Federal Protective Service is there to keep you safe.
If you are one of the 1.4 million people that visit any of the 9,000 federal facilities each day, the Federal Protective Service is there to keep you safe.

Using MIST, FPS can survey a facility’s current security posture and make countermeasure recommendations.

This multi-component application includes a survey tool, artificial intelligence-powered threat determination, a security asset tracking system, and a stakeholders communication tool.

The threat determination tool was a 2020 R&D 100 award-winning application for its use of artificial intelligence in real-world, mission-critical government applications.

New to the application is the MIST Stakeholder Self-Service Tool (SST), which is currently providing more than 300 Federal agencies with the documentation and data necessary to maintain ISC compliance at the national level.

The SST’s secure application gateway allows security managers and agency leadership to view current and prior facility security assessments and countermeasure recommendations while documenting and ensuring their ISC compliance.

SST is user-friendly and requires no training to use. Since its deployment, the tool has saved FPS and individual agencies thousands of hours in data gathering and reporting to prove ISC compliance.

Beyond meeting the compliance regulations, the SST allows agencies to explore options and suggestions to assess their facility portfolio more efficiently. Through the use of this tool, agencies are now better positioned to make strategic budget decisions concerning the security posture within the ISC standards.

The FPS provides integrated security and law enforcement services to more than 9,000 Federal facilities located in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

These services include conducting facility security assessments; responding to calls for service for crimes in progress and other incidents to protect life and property; and detecting, investigating, and mitigating threats.

The partnership between Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and the FPS is at the forefront of integrating data science, artificial intelligence, and physical security, marrying the distinct and signature strengths of a DOE national laboratory and a premier Federal law enforcement agency.
