Redstone Arsenal, one of the most important military bases in the United States (serving the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Justice (DOJ), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the likely future home of U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM), requires best-in-class security solutions.

And with 44,000 employees and guests using the facility, it also requires solutions geared towards improving daily efficiency around the base.

Enter NEC National Security Systems

The powerful combination of NEC's top-ranked biometric technology and continually refined AI algorithms present quick and accurate solutions for identifying and verifying individuals.
The powerful combination of NEC’s top-ranked biometric technology and continually refined AI algorithms present quick and accurate solutions for identifying and verifying individuals.

Consistently ranked No. 1 for accuracy by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), NEC has become famous for its face recognition technology, which stands head and shoulders above the crowd.

It’s this algorithm that met Redstone Arsenal’s need for verifying entry onto base.

As of March 15, 2021, workers and visitors alike have been able to secure entry onto the base from the comfort of their car.

With the windows rolled down, registered users are able to pull up slowly (3-5 mph), passing through security checkpoints with virtually no stopping as face recognition technology verifies their status.

(Redstone Arsenal is the only base in the country with this facial recognition technology. Redstone Garrison Commander Col. Glenn Mellor tells us, “We are the only post right now with facial recognition. So, we are leading the army in this part of the technology.” Arsenal representatives say, “…all Arsenal employees, members of the military, and retirees and their dependents who utilize a Defense Common Access Card for entry to the installation are automatically registered in the pilot programs database via hand-held scanners at the Gates. Once the initial scan is complete, the registered individual is clear to use the Facial Recognition lanes”. Courtesy of WZDX News and YouTube. Posted on Mar 12, 2021.)

The new biometrics system allows them to minimize the time-consuming checks and gives security personnel an added tool to verify identity with greater assurances.

It gets better.

The technology is deployed in special face recognition lanes for single-occupancy vehicles, clearly marked and available to those who opt into Redstone’s automatic installation entry program in advance.

This gives users freedom of choice and speeds up wait times for entry onto base for everyone.

“Buzzing into work” for Redstone Arsenal employees looks like slowly approaching the front gates leaving about two car lengths between each authorized user and simply showing your face until the light turns green, granting them access.

The Department of Homeland Security Biometric Technology Rally confirms the reliability of this technology, praising the system for achieving an accuracy matching rate of 99.9% or higher.

This security solution, implemented by NEC’s prime partner, Leidos, was creatively designed to meet the unique needs of the Redstone Arsenal facility.

Adding to its importance, Redstone houses some of the most sensitive information and materials across the U.S. Department of Defense, including the nation’s missile and rocket programs and technology.

Because of the high security requirements, “access control” is a regular step base employees must complete multiple times a day.

NEC exists to improve the safety, security, fairness and efficiency of the organizations it serves through the breakthrough technology it produces.

There is no better group to offer these improvements to than the servicemen and women of the U.S. military.

The speed and reliability of facial recognition that NEC is known for comes from their ability to combine both real-time identification with verification and situation analysis resulting in faster decision making, preemptive security, and smoother delivery of services.
